The latest push came on Friday\u00a0in\u00a0remarks<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0the Energy Transition Roundtable in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, held just days before the\u00a0formal\u00a0opening of the COP30<\/a> climate change conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fossil fuel age is ending.\u202fClean energy is rising.\u202fLet us make the transition fair, fast, and final,\u201d he said.\u202f<\/p>\n

\u2018Renewables revolution\u2019 underway<\/p>\n

The UN chief\u00a0told\u00a0world\u00a0leaders\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cthe global energy landscape is changing at lightning speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Green\u00a0energy sources accounted for 90 per cent of new power capacity\u00a0last year, while investment\u00a0in them\u00a0reached\u00a0$2 trillion, or\u00a0$800 billion\u00a0more than fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0renewables\u00a0revolution is here,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said. \u201cBut we must go much faster \u2013 and ensure all nations share the benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n

The international community must ensure a \u201cjust, orderly and equitable\u201d transition from fossil fuels, triple renewable energy\u00a0capacity\u00a0and double energy efficiency by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n

Keep global warming\u00a0in check<\/p>\n

However, countries are falling short.\u00a0\u00a0Even if\u00a0new national climate action plans\u00a0are implemented, global temperature rise is still expected to exceed 2 degrees Celsius\u00a0above\u00a0the\u00a0pre-industrial era.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means more floods, more heat, more suffering \u2013 everywhere,\u201d he\u00a0warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo return below 1.5 degrees by century\u2019s end, global emissions must fall by almost half by 2030, reach net zero by 2050, and go net negative afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focus on policies and people<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General outlined\u00a0five areas for\u00a0action, calling first for countries to\u00a0\u201calign laws, policies and incentives with a just energy transition;\u202fand eliminate fossil fuel subsidies that distort markets and lock us into the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governments\u00a0must \u201cput people and equity at the\u00a0centre\u00a0of the transition\u201d and support workers and communities who depend on oil,\u00a0coal\u00a0and gas for their living, including through training\u00a0and new opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is particularly the case for young people and women.<\/p>\n

Support\u00a0developing countries<\/p>\n

\u201cInvest in grids, storage, and efficiency.\u202fRenewables are surging, infrastructure must catch up \u2013 fast,\u201d he\u00a0continued.\u202f<\/p>\n

As \u201ctechnology must be part of the solution, not a new source of strain,\u201d clean energy must power all new electricity demand \u201cincluding from the data\u00a0centres\u00a0driving the AI revolution.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n

His\u00a0final point\u00a0stressed the need to \u201cunlock finance at scale for developing countries,\u201d noting that Africa receives just two per cent of global clean energy investment.<\/p>\n
