a new joint interview<\/a> on the podcast We Can Do Hard Things, the couple is opening up about how they broke the news at home.<\/p>\n\u201cWe had to do that thing that parents do so well, which is just immediately put on a mask,\u201d said McNearney, who also serves as executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Eventually, Kimmel and McNearney realized they\u2019d have to tell their children, lest they hear about it from other kids at school.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe sat them down on the couch and we told them\u2026 And we realized in that moment that any other time we\u2019ve sat them down to talk about something, I guess it\u2019s been good,\u201d McNearney continued, recalling how their daughter Jane expected the news to be something fun\u2014like a trip to Disneyland.<\/p>\n
But when Kimmel told them his show had been suspended, their kids\u2019 reactions were surprisingly poignant. \u201cOur daughter immediately burst into tears,\u201d said McNearney. \u201cAnd she said, \u2018I\u2019ll sell my Labubus.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
After calming their daughter, the couple\u2019s son, Billy, asked a particularly astute question. \u201cOur son asked if the President had done this,\u201d McNearney revealed. At the same time, Kimmel and McNearney both answered \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s certainly not an experience I had with my family in Las Vegas,\u201d Kimmel joked.<\/p>\n
Kimmel added that some of his daughter\u2019s sadness came from her belief that she\u2019ll one day take over her father\u2019s show. \u201cWe\u2019ve never said this to her. We don\u2019t know where she got [this idea]. She has three other siblings. Two of them are actually adults and would be more qualified to take over, if it was indeed a family business that you could hand down to your kid.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before wrapping up their talk, McNearney tried to put the moment in perspective for their kids. \u201cIt\u2019s really important to remember this moment,\u201d she recalled telling them. \u201cYour dad and his show are on the right side of history. I want you to remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd my daughter, very earnestly, paused,\u201d McNearney recounted, \u201cand she said, \u2018I thought we were on the left.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
While Kimmel and McNearney assured their children that everything would be fine, McNearney admits she wasn\u2019t as hopeful in reality. \u201cJimmy and I really both believed that night the show was never coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sit-down with their children wasn\u2019t the only story the couple shared on We Can Do Hard Things. McNearney also revealed that Kimmel had a special guest in attendance the night his show was pulled off the air.<\/p>\n
During a trip to Mexico, Kimmel had met a hotel waiter named Moises. After complimenting Moises to the hotel\u2019s owner, the couple returned on a subsequent trip to find that Moises had been promoted to manager. Later, Kimmel wrote a letter in support of Moises\u2019s work visa to come to the United States. Moises eventually obtained his visa\u2014and had come to Jimmy Kimmel Live! that night to thank Kimmel in person.<\/p>\n
