The veteran guard, who joined the Fever’s roster earlier this year, is currently healing from an ACL injury which she incurred back in August. As the WNBA experiences a historic surge in popularity, Colson discussed that the league has had a dynamic evolution. Colson credits the rise of opportunities for women athletes and the new NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) era for giving players more freedom and visibility. She believes this is just the beginning of something much bigger for women’s basketball.

Sydney Colson reflects on her road to recovery and new opportunities

All Things Athletes Unlimited, Friendship & More with Sydney Colson & Theresa Plaisance

Reflecting on the shift in women’s sports, Sydney Colson told Ros Gold-Onwude on “Good Follow” that earlier, the majority of players weren’t getting these many opportunities. There were only a few players who used to get the big shots, like having a podcast or something else. “The landscape has changed since NIL, with more eyes on the sport, since partnerships and sponsorships that people have. People are just trying to take advantage and maximize the opportunities they have”, Colson said. The Indiana Fever guard’s journey back from injury has also been deeply personal. Reckoning her recovery, she said, “Like it’s going well. Tomorrow will be 11 weeks. Um, and it’s very, I forgot how much of a mental journey it is, you know, as well as physical. But you know, I always try to look at stuff from a glass-half-full perspective. Find the silver lining in things. Like trust that whatever God’s purpose is for me, I don’t have to understand it at the moment because every time things have happened in my life, I’ve been like, ‘Huh?’ But then it makes sense down the line!”Now approaching free agency in 2026, Colson remains optimistic about the forthcoming opportunity, especially amid the WNBPA’s heated debate over the CBA. As of now Caitlin Clark’s teammate continues strengthening her knee and preparing for her return. “Since I’ve been there in the offseason, I’m just, you know, strengthening it… But yeah, I’m just trusting the timing of it all,” she shared. With her positive mindset and steady recovery, Sydney Colson will be eyeing a stronger return in the WNBA’s next season.
