MUBI goes wide, sans platform release, this weekend with Lynne Ramsay\u2019s psychosexual postpartum frenzy \u201cDie My Love<\/a>\u201d in theaters around the country. It\u2019s the distributor and streamer\u2019s widest release since \u201cThe Substance\u201d took a similar trajectory last year, ultimately earning more than $17 million in the U.S. <\/p>\n

The film<\/a> stars Jennifer Lawrence in a performance as confrontational and abrasive as the one she gave in Darren Aronofsky\u2019s \u201cmother!\u201d Here, she plays a sputtering-out writer suffering depression and psychosis after giving birth to her first child. Lawrence, who was in the second trimester of her second pregnancy while filming, shot the movie in Calgary, Canada, with co-stars Robert Pattinson<\/a> (who plays her hapless husband), Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte, and LaKeith Stanfield. <\/p>\n

Some minor editorial reshapings were done, as Ramsay explained to IndieWire in a recent interview<\/a>, since the movie premiered at Cannes in May. \u201cDie My Love\u201d is not going to repeat horror movie \u201cThe Substance\u2019s\u201d box office numbers by any means for MUBI, but the point of the wide release isn\u2019t that: It\u2019s to lure more subscribers to its arthouse streaming platform.<\/p>\n

Screen Talk<\/a> podcast hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio reassess \u201cDie My Love\u201d post-Cannes on this week\u2019s episode. Lawrence has to knock out one in a stacked deck of Best Actress Oscar contenders \u2014 Jessie Buckley, Renate Reinsve, Emma Stone, Rose Byrne, and Cynthia Erivo \u2014 to make it into the final five. <\/p>\n

Elsewhere on this week\u2019s episode, we also look at the state of the race for Netflix\u2019s slate of awards contenders, with Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein\u201d<\/a> rising among Academy voters Anne has spoken to as the movie enters its first weekend of streaming. Anne and Ryan both have a good feeling about \u201cTrain Dreams\u201d scoring a Best Actor Oscar nomination and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar. \u201cJay Kelly\u201d is also playing well for hometown industry voters, and up against another industry movie but one flung to Norway, Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cA House of Dynamite,\u201d meanwhile, has struggled since playing festivals after Venice despite strong streaming showings in the Netflix top 10 the last two weeks.<\/p>\n
