{"id":280148,"date":"2025-11-08T22:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T22:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/280148\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T22:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T22:40:10","slug":"tech-workers-are-in-deep-deep-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/280148\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Workers Are in Deep, Deep Trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">For years, any American kid eying a stable, future-proof job was told to \u201clearn to code.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Now in 2025, anyone who followed that advice faces a painful reckoning: a decade of booming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentclearinghouse.org\/nscblog\/computer-science-has-highest-increase-in-bachelors-earners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">computer science enrollments<\/a> has created a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/computer-science-college-graduates-jobs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pile-up of graduates<\/a> entering an <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/ai-entry-level-job-grads\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">abysmal job market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/october-challenger-report-153074-job-cuts-on-cost-cutting-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new report<\/a> by the analyst firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas, which tracks layoffs across various industries, found that the US tech industry had the highest number of layoffs in October of any sector, with a whopping 33,281 tech workers out of the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">That\u2019s an awfully high number for one month, and it looks even worse in context \u2014 just a month earlier, the number of tech industry layoffs was only 5,639.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Tech companies are planning to lay off 141,159 jobs this year so far, per the report, up from 120,470 over the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">And it likely may not look much better in the near future, either. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cIt\u2019s possible with rate cuts and a strong showing in November, companies may make a late-season push for employees,\u201d the report reads, \u201cbut at this point, we do not expect a strong seasonal hiring environment in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The analysis was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/october-2025-tech-industry-layoffs-blood-bath-21143585.php\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spotted by SF Gate<\/a>, which reported that tech company job cuts in the US are at their highest levels since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/recession-ended-april-2020-making-it-shortest-record-2021-07-19\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">short-lived recession<\/a>. For the month of October, however, the analyst report notes that total layoffs haven\u2019t been this high since 2003 \u2014 in other words, not even the global financial crisis was this much of a bloodbath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While it\u2019s easy to blame AI for the tech industry layoffs, CG&amp;C highlights some other factors contributing to the dismal labor news. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOctober\u2019s pace of job cutting was much higher than average for the month,\u201d the firm wrote. \u201cSome industries are\u00a0correcting after the hiring boom of the pandemic, but this comes as AI adoption, softening consumer and corporate spending, and rising costs drive belt-tightening and hiring freezes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Across all industries, \u201cthose laid off now are finding it harder to quickly secure new roles, which could further loosen the labor market,\u201d the report commentary read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The depressing economic news comes as tech companies look to be some of the first adopters of their own AI systems, a proving ground of sorts for the software they hope will bring about a new stage of <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-industry-geoffrey-hinton-automation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human civilization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Last week, Amazon cut some <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/future-society\/internet-aws-amazon-layoffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14,000 jobs<\/a> within its corporate offices, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/world-at-work\/amazon-targets-many-30000-corporate-job-cuts-sources-say-2025-10-27\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands more<\/a> likely on the way. Over the summer, when Microsoft sacked 9,000 employees, its CEO suggested freshly-unemployed workers <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/microsoft-boss-ai-advice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turn to AI chatbots<\/a> to help \u201creduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Meanwhile, there\u2019s plenty of reason to doubt that AI is actually capable of replacing thousands of employees \u2014 a narrative tech executives have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/big-tech-ceos-are-fueling-the-fire-of-ai-confusion\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">material interest<\/a> in maintaining.
