Garrett Hampson was signed to a Minor League Deal, with an invitation to spring training at the end of January 2025. Hampson made good on that spring training invite, hitting 283\/393\/.348, which was good enough to make the Opening Day roster. Unfortunately, Garrett just couldn\u2019t get it done in the regular season, basically from day one. Well, day two if you want to be really specific, since the most memorable moment I can find with Hampson as a Diamondback is this absolutely terrible game ending baserunning gaffe against the Chicago Cubs on Mar 29th.<\/p>\n
I think that play, which ended the D\u2019Backs second comeback in as many games into the season, really set the tone for the rest of the season. Hampson ending up going just 5 for 30 with nine walks in the 18 games he played in. He had absolutely no power, resulting in that paltry .167\/.359\/.167 batting line. Hampson defense and ability to draw a walk did help him have some positive value, even if it is an essentially non-existent 0.1 bWAR.<\/p>\n
Hampson was designated for assignment on May 12, and released on the 17th. He\u2019d get picked up five days later on by the Cincinnati Reds. only to be designated for assignment 30 days later. The St Louis Cardinals then claimed Hampson, who\u2019d stick on their roster all the way until he was designated for a assignment for the third time on September 8th, and released on the 11th. All together across the three organizations Hampson hit .143\/.250\/.169 with a 26 wRC+ and a 20 OPS+.<\/p>\n
Somehow Hampson was even worse for the Reds and Cardinals, since he ended up with a combined value that was negative according to both versions of Wins Above Replacement, -0.2 fWAR and -0.4 bWAR. He did have a three pitch scoreless inning doing mop up relief duty and positive fielding metrics, but otherwise Garrett Hampson\u2019s 2025 season was a catastrophe.
