They were asked about their music listening habits and whether they played an instrument.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/theres-a-surprising-link-between-music-and-brain-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">There&#8217;s a Surprising Link Between Music And Brain Health<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Folks who &#8220;always&#8221; listened to music (as opposed to never, rarely, or sometimes listeners) were 39 percent less likely to develop dementia after at least three years of follow-up, and were 17 percent less likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_impairment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">milder forms<\/a> of cognitive impairments. They also performed better on tests of general cognition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neuroscientists-find-two-types-of-brain-cells-that-help-us-make-memories\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">episodic memory<\/a>, which is important for recalling everyday events.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762725255_441_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Those who were regularly picking up an instrument to make music were 35 percent less likely to develop dementia, but, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/13607863.2019.1699019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unlike in other studies<\/a>, there was no significant improvement for other kinds of cognitive impairments.<\/p>\n<p>People who both listened to and played music had a 33 percent reduced dementia risk, and a 22 percent reduced risk for unrelated cognitive impairments. Education level seemed to play a role, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Music engagement benefits were strongest in those with higher education (16+ years) but showed inconsistent results in the middle education group (12\u201315 years),&#8221; the study&#8217;s authors <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/gps.70163\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The paper&#8217;s lead author, public health researcher Emma Jaffa from Monash University in Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/newshub.medianet.com.au\/2025\/10\/music-can-stave-off-dementia-by-up-to-40-per-cent-monash-study-finds\/126069\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> these results suggest &#8220;music activities may be an accessible strategy for maintaining cognitive health in older adults, though causation cannot be established.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762559827_648_Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While we don&#8217;t know for sure if listening to music can really stave off dementia, hearing loss is a known risk factor for dementia, and research shows hearing aids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/landmark-trial-suggests-hearing-aids-help-reduce-cognitive-decline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can reduce cognitive decline<\/a>.
