Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger warns Dems not to prolong record-breaking shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/us-news\/democrat-abigail-spanberger-wins-va-gubernatorial-election-against-gop-lt-gov-winsome-earle-sears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger <\/a>warned fellow Democrats to not <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/22\/us-news\/dems-admit-to-prolonging-shutdown-for-leverage-as-nov-1-open-enrollment-deadline-nears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">prolong the record-breaking shutdown<\/a> following the party\u2019s victories in the off-cycle elections last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d Spanberger told CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation\u201d when asked if Dems\u2019 wins \u2014 including her own \u2014 gave mandate to \u201chold the line in Congress and refuse to fund the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur victory was a victory that was based on a campaign that was addressing concerns related to costs and chaos,\u201d she said, before adding: \u201cThe government needs to open and it needs to open immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abigail Spanberger underscored the need for the government shutdown to end. AP<\/p>\n<p>Spanberger easily won her race to become governor of Virginia last Tuesday. The state has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/articles\/states-with-the-most-federal-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">second-largest number<\/a> of federal workers of any state after California in the country.<\/p>\n<p>She served in the House of Representatives from 2019 until January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Her ex-roommate and fellow governor-elect, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), meanwhile cheered on the Democrats\u2019 shutdown fight.<\/p>\n<p>The North Jersey Dem having joined the House in January 2019 alongside Spanberger.<\/p>\n<p>Since late September, Senate Democrats have been using the 60-vote filibuster to block a clean House-passed stopgap measure to fund the government as a means of leveraging concessions from Republicans on healthcare policy.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have offered Democrats a vote on their healthcare demands, but have been adamant it be kept separate from the shutdown fight, fearful that Dems will leverage government funding again in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Mikie Sherrill called on Democrats to keep up the government shutdown fight, hoping that they can get concessions from Republicans on healthcare. CBS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important that we keep up that fight, because we see in the market, costs going up by 175% if the Republicans don\u2019t address this health care crisis,\u201d Sherrill told \u201cFace the Nation\u201d in an interview that aired Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill \u2014 who won the governor\u2019s seat in New Jersey by making her campaign about President Trump \u2014 blamed the administration and Republicans for the chaos caused by the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed that \u201cbecause the president refuses to open up the government, we\u2019re seeing another 10% in flights being derailed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pressed about her own vote against keeping the government funded, Sherrill noted that \u201cRepublicans that have the presidency, they have the majority in the Senate, they have the majority in the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have seized on a clip of House Minority Whip Katherine Clark touting the government shutdown fight as \u201cleverage.\u201d AP<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Republicans only have 53 votes in the Senate, which is short of the 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster on legislation to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Republicans have paraded around a clip of House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) admitting, \u201cOf course there will be families that are going to suffer,\u201d from the shutdown while stressing \u201cit is one of the few leverage items we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeverage to serve the American people,\u201d Sherrill shot back when pressed about Clark\u2019s statement. \u201cI mean, we see again and again these Republican attacks on everything from health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of Democrats\u2019 demands is concerns about the enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year and GOP-backed Medicaid reform to the One Big Beautiful Bill (now known as the Working Families Tax Cut Act).<\/p>\n<p>Spanberger had agreed that \u201cthe impacts on health care are already catastrophic,\u201d but the Virginia Democrat argued \u201cwe can\u2019t compound that pain by keeping the government closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill and Spanberger, who were both national security buffs and members of the same freshman class in Congress that were elected during the 2018 blue wave year, had briefly been roommates during their overlapping time in the lower chamber.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WASHINGTON \u2014Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger warned fellow Democrats to not prolong the record-breaking shutdown following the party\u2019s victories&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":282041,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[4,450,1340,4515,1070,9292,451,90155,3,111,452,453,194,5148],"class_list":{"0":"post-282040","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-breaking-news","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-congress","11":"tag-democrats","12":"tag-elections","13":"tag-government-shutdown","14":"tag-headlines","15":"tag-mikie-sherrill","16":"tag-news","17":"tag-politics","18":"tag-top-stories","19":"tag-topstories","20":"tag-us-news","21":"tag-virginia"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282040","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=282040"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282040\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/282041"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=282040"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=282040"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=282040"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
