{"id":282309,"date":"2025-11-10T01:10:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T01:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/282309\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T01:10:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T01:10:26","slug":"shakeup-at-top-of-portlands-wnba-franchise-raises-serious-questions-about-expansion-teams-future-bill-oram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/282309\/","title":{"rendered":"Shakeup at top of Portland\u2019s WNBA franchise raises serious questions about expansion team\u2019s future | Bill Oram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"76DXAN4UVVBZLCPXH6QIHPUJ6E\">Maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/wnba\/2025\/06\/portlands-wnba-owners-had-one-job-dont-name-the-team-after-the-disaster-destroying-our-state-bill-oram.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/wnba\/2025\/06\/portlands-wnba-owners-had-one-job-dont-name-the-team-after-the-disaster-destroying-our-state-bill-oram.html\">the Fire<\/a> is the right name for Portland\u2019s WNBA expansion team after all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VD3CZWWX2ZCV7LGM2BYNLIVBKA\">How else to describe the five-alarm chaos that is unfolding before the franchise has even announced a color scheme?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QG44QQ6H6NBULFJBTUWYYAEQ7Y\">Less than three weeks before the expected launch of an official brand identity, the franchise, which is supposed to start play in 10 months, is now without its top executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CT5AQ3ZFEJELPKVDWHAW4SD624\">Employee No. 1 is out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XKG3JFHBVBFFHNNFMIECCXIAVI\">Sources told The Oregonian\/OregonLive that President Inky Son, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/news\/portland-wnba-franchise-names-inky-son-as-team-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/news\/portland-wnba-franchise-names-inky-son-as-team-president\">hired at the beginning of April<\/a>, has been fired, leaving the franchise without a leader in its most prominent and visible role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FWDBERNB5JHQ5IVWWK6APHTUME\">\u201cAs a matter of company policy, we don\u2019t comment on personnel matters,\u201d RAJ Sports said in a statement to The Oregonian\/OregonLive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IU5K3OKEIZFSTK5OBS352P4LWY\">The stunning exit comes after what sources had described as significant \u201cgrowing pains\u201d amid a \u201crocky\u201d rollout for the expansion team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7XYEIV2SGZCQXDO6A6CDBND64Y\">Son did not respond to either voice or text messages left on her cell phone Thursday evening. A spokesperson for the WNBA did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KPRVXUJBWNG6VFTRMWISFZAK3M\">Examples of teams reversing course on such a key position so soon after making the hire are hard to find, and might be unprecedented in circumstances such as these: An expansion team so near showtime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JFXL4OZZJJA7TCM53QYYO6RIVA\">Son\u2019s sudden ouster raises significant questions about Portland\u2019s WNBA launch which has already been seen as far behind schedule. Only in recent weeks had the team begun hiring support staff and the franchise remains without a general manager to make basketball decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P3RYDIPY3ZC7PJHZTEQLMGZZRY\">By contrast, the Toronto Tempo, which was announced as an expansion team four months before Portland, hired general manager Monica Wright Rogers in February and announced its brand identity close to 18 months before basketballs would start bouncing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6OYOI5Q6TFGUZJPN46IYWXNVWY\">Some sources expressed hope that the franchise\u2019s stumble will serve as a wake-up call to siblings Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal about the stakes of building a WNBA franchise in Portland and what it will take to do so successfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UR3UDZJFXNCSFHTU3LZOKOHQF4\">While the team has not yet shared publicly its plans for a team name, the WNBA last week filed several trademarks for the \u201cPortland Fire,\u201d in an apparent bid to resurrect the branding of the WNBA team that previously played in Portland from 2000-02 and in its brief tenure attracted a loyal following. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ATEWW7FC25AXFDRM22TXPXZ73E\">The franchise has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WNBA\/status\/1936079395074039938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WNBA\/status\/1936079395074039938\">hinted that it plans to launch its brand identity on July 15<\/a>, but there was no immediate indication Son\u2019s departure was related to the brand launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DWH6GT73LFCXND4TXWPB3YOOBQ\">On Thursday, the team declared triumphantly that it had secured 10,000 season ticket deposits for the team\u2019s inaugural season, when Portland and Toronto will become the 14th and 15th teams in a league that has exploded in both popularity and value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PQUTLFEDANF4PL53VBXXQ6Q7KA\">In a statement heralding that news, Mike Whitehead, RAJ Sports\u2019 managing director, said, \u201cThis extraordinary level of community engagement goes beyond casual interest, it further cements Portland\u2019s position as the global epicenter of women\u2019s sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N3ZBHGFUDZBKJGY3LJMVG7LRHU\">The statement also included a comment from Bhathal Merage. It notably did not include any mention of, or comment from, Son, who joined the expansion franchise after eight years as an executive with the NBA Players Association. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G3LRQZRG2ZCDPCX2RWVUM6S33I\">Bhathal Merage and her brother, Alex, are based in Southern California and, sources said, have primarily visited Portland for launch events, such as the groundbreaking of a joint women\u2019s sports facility in Hillsboro last month, and for Portland Thorns\u2019 games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IQHZYLRDH5AK5AZHW4DPBXRWHU\">Multiple sources raised concerns of turbulence with the expansion team getting off the ground, pointing to a lack of connection between ownership and the city of Portland as well as women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TEOJL2LMRNGFXKD4R6OROVIKWA\">While the Bhathal siblings own a minority stake of the Sacramento Kings, they were inexperienced in women\u2019s sports before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland-thorns\/2024\/01\/portland-thorns-sold-to-bhathal-family-for-63-million-details-next-steps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland-thorns\/2024\/01\/portland-thorns-sold-to-bhathal-family-for-63-million-details-next-steps.html\">purchasing the Thorns of the NWSL in early 2024 from Merritt Paulson for $63 million. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K7R3ORJFHJHALMYL3AZ6LSEIOY\">The opportunity to claim the WNBA\u2019s 15th team fell into their laps shortly thereafter, following the collapse of an expansion bid from a year earlier that had fallen apart in the 11th hour when ZoomInfo founder Kirk Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/sports\/2023\/11\/how-the-wnba-to-portland-plans-fell-apart-days-before-expected-announcement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/sports\/2023\/11\/how-the-wnba-to-portland-plans-fell-apart-days-before-expected-announcement.html\">backed out<\/a> as the team\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WLRE45JN4NFIVGTRDRRUQN42MI\">The WNBA awarded the Portland and the Bhathals the team last September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NH5EEPOR7REWJCKDI4JI75FLJA\">That followed a grassroots effort, led in part by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, who in 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nba\/2023\/02\/bill-oram-portland-goes-public-with-its-pitch-for-wnba-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nba\/2023\/02\/bill-oram-portland-goes-public-with-its-pitch-for-wnba-expansion.html\">hosted a forum to woo Commissioner Cathy Englebert<\/a> at northeast Portland\u2019s first of its kind all-women\u2019s sports bar, The Sports Bra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L7JXTNJ6VZF2LK4I4VV53UNU7I\">In his role, Whitehead oversees both the operations of the Thorns and the WNBA franchise. People wary of the trajectory of Portland\u2019s launch expressed concern about Whitehead\u2019s lack of experience in women\u2019s sports and the fact that he remains based in Sacramento, where he previously worked for the NBA\u2019s Kings, and has not relocated to Portland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IJUKRIGM7FCIVAQHO46LHYP6CQ\">In a statement announcing Son\u2019s hire in April, Whitehead described the Georgetown University graduate as someone who would \u201clay the groundwork for future growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4LLM67GMPNGVNMF5RHMWLP2YTM\">Son was born in Korea and immigrated to the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrownestonegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Brownestone-Group-Pivot-Perfect-QA-with-Inky-Son.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/thebrownestonegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Brownestone-Group-Pivot-Perfect-QA-with-Inky-Son.pdf\">telling one interviewer<\/a> that she was unable to speak English when she arrived in the country at the age of 8. She made a compelling figure atop the team\u2019s organizational chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U2AXD45KZ5FQ5O4FWBRFYBNVOQ\">\u201cWe are confident her leadership will drive the franchise to new heights,\u201d Whitehead said in a statement, \u201ccreating a lasting impact both in Portland and across the WNBA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZLOFK7Z3GNGCTCKK6CYCSM7QFM\">Before arriving in Portland, Son was the chief administrative officer with the NBPA and held prior roles with the association before that.
