The first is an ecological gem: a 3,600 square-mile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1501252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">deepwater coral reef<\/a> discovered less than a decade ago. The second treasure puts the first in immediate danger. Billions of barrels of oil may lie in the ancient sediments beneath the seabed, and licenses have just been approved to drill there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000n3b6n2i7g9bxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few hundred miles north, off the coast of Guyana, companies are already pumping around 650,000 barrels of oil a day from a huge deep-water reservoir discovered in 2015. The find has transformed this rainforest-carpeted country into the planet\u2019s newest petrostate and highest oil producer per capita.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000o3b6n93wru1kc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several thousand miles inland to the south, the wide, dusty plains of western Argentina\u2019s Vaca Muerta \u2014 \u201cdead cow\u201d in English \u2014 are dotted with oil wells. Fossil fuel production from this enormous shale deposit has boomed over the past decade, putting it on track to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rystadenergy.com\/news\/argentina-s-vaca-muerta-shale-patch-could-produce-1-million-bpd-in-2030-but-hurdl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than a million barrels a day<\/a> by 2030, analysts predict.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000p3b6n67ppzpv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Welcome to South America\u2019s new oil frontier. \u201cIt\u2019s really incredible how fast and how much it\u2019s expanding,\u201d said Nicole Figueiredo de Oliveira, the executive director at environmental non-profit Arayara.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000q3b6nyuq7su0z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Countries across the region are ramping up extraction but Brazil, Guyana and Argentina are at the forefront \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordenergy.org\/wpcms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Brazil-Guyana-and-Argentina-South-America-drives-non-OPEC-supply-growth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">among the top five drivers<\/a> of global oil growth outside of OPEC, the group of major oil exporters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000r3b6n6c6nnv4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They are three very different countries: an economic behemoth with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/04\/americas\/amazon-deforestation-brazil-climate-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environment-championing president<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/29\/climate\/guyana-oil-exxon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biodiversity hotspot<\/a> with high rates of poverty and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/14\/politics\/javier-milei-president-trump-argentina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economically volatile<\/a> country led by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/01\/americas\/chainsaw-candidate-argentina-javier-milei-hnk-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chainsaw-wielding climate denier<\/a>. Yet they are united in their quest to expand oil production, arguing it\u2019s vital to their economic and social development.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000s3b6ncca5ek2o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This new fossil fuel boom is happening just as the impacts of the climate crisis \u2014 driven by fossil fuels \u2014 are beginning to bite in ever more alarming ways. People in South America are dying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/hot-dry-and-windy-conditions-that-drove-devastating-pantanal-wildfires-40-more-intense-due-to-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/19\/climate\/brazil-floods-social-problems-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/14\/americas\/landslides-flooding-cut-off-mexico-communities-intl-latam\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">storms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/30\/climate\/amazon-rivers-drought-satellite-pictures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">droughts<\/a> made longer and more catastrophic by climate change.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000t3b6ndafffbx7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brazil\u2019s role as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/06\/climate\/cop30-chaos-love-motels-oil-drilling-amazon-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">host of the COP30 climate conference<\/a>, which is supposed to be a landmark summit where countries set out goals to radically reduce planet-heating pollution, adds a particular dissonance to this oil surge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000u3b6na71o69d6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as global oil demand stays strong, and other, richer, countries show few signs of scaling back, their argument is: Why shouldn\u2019t oil supply come from South America?\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-10-30t192923z-1713606521-rc294ga7pute-rtrmadp-3-climate-cop30-brazil-deforestation.JPG\" alt=\"The Amazon rainforest with the city of Bel\u00e9m, in the background on August 10, 2025. Brazil has approved exploratory oil drilling at the mouth of the Amazon, only a few hundred miles from Bel\u00e9m, where delegates are gathering for the COP30 climate conference.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1688\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000w3b6nyda5vvle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The continent has a long history of fossil fuel extraction; it holds the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/research\/latin-americas-hydrocarbon-production-key-global-energy-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">second-largest reserves of oil and gas<\/a> after the Middle East.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000x3b6n8zd5ivlw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet it\u2019s one of the few regions that didn\u2019t take advantage of the oil boom at the beginning of this century due to political riskiness and an aversion to private investment, said Francisco Monaldi, director of the Latin America Energy Program at Rice University. \u201cBut that is changing very significantly,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000y3b6npw8udue8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent discoveries have stirred excitement, especially as the oil in South America is typically cheaper than average \u2014 deepwater sources, in particular, tend to produce large amounts at lower cost \u2014 and it also tends emit slightly lower levels of climate pollution per barrel, as it often requires less processing and is produced using newer infrastructure and cleaner energy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82000z3b6naxho8asz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Huge oil companies including Exxon and Chevron have plowed in, seeing dollar signs in South America\u2019s deep oceans and shale fields just as the US shale boom starts to plateau.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200103b6n3zbmhlf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brazil is a superstar: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rystadenergy.com\/insights\/brazil-s-well-services-market-poised-for-significant-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">region\u2019s largest<\/a> oil and gas producer. Production has \u201creached levels that have never been seen in the region,\u201d Monaldi said. This is in large part due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/country-commercial-guides\/brazil-oil-and-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ultra-deep \u201cpre-salt\u201d oil reserves<\/a> discovered in 2006 buried under thick layers of ancient salt beneath the ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200113b6n5smwhbrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Crude oil became the country\u2019s top export in 2024 for the first time, overtaking soybeans, and there are hopes production will ramp up much further.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200123b6nuuite4sj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In August, BP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/news-and-insights\/press-releases\/bp-announces-hydrocarbon-discovery-at-bumerangue-exploration-well-offshore-brazil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> it had made its largest oil and gas discovery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/04\/business\/bp-oil-gas-discovery-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in 25 years<\/a> off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Farther south, near Uruguay, oil companies hope the Pelotas Basin could be another new frontier.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200133b6n8aghtl2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps the most controversial project is the one at the mouth of the Amazon River \u2014 the Foz do Amazonas basin \u2014 part of what\u2019s known as the \u201cEquatorial Margin,\u201d a stretch of ocean along the northern coast of Brazil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200143b6ngt6yxmkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In June, Brazil <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-amazon-oil-lula-510140c412d8efbaab105e1b60ea27ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">auctioned off<\/a> several offshore oil blocks in the region, 19 of which are in the Amazon Basin, to companies including Chevron, Exxon and Brazil\u2019s state-run oil company Petrobras.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200153b6nffc5g9z5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Petrobras has been trying to drill here for many years. In 2023, Brazil\u2019s environmental agency IBAMA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnnbrasil.com.br\/politica\/lula-diz-querer-exploracao-de-petroleo-no-amapa-se-antes-houver-pesquisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">denied<\/a> it an offshore drilling license, citing environmental concerns. But last month, the agency gave the greenlight for exploratory drilling \u201cafter a rigorous environmental licensing process,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/ibama\/pt-br\/assuntos\/notas\/2025\/ibama-emite-licenca-de-operacao-para-perfuracao-maritima-no-bloco-fza-m-59-na-bacia-da-foz-do-amazonas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> from IBAMA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200163b6neq2p7xme@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The agency\u2019s task was to assess the \u201ctechnical feasibility\u201d of the project only, not the political or strategic side of oil exploitation, said a spokesperson for Brazil\u2019s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which oversees IBAMA. Any process involving high-risk areas such as the Foz do Amazonas \u201cmust comply with the strictest technical, scientific, and environmental standards,\u201d they added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200173b6nhmhya27m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The decision \u201cis an achievement of Brazilian society,\u201d said Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.petrobras.com.br\/w\/petrobras-obt%C3%A9m-licen%C3%A7a-de-opera%C3%A7%C3%A3o-para-pesquisa-explorat%C3%B3ria-em-%C3%A1guas-profundas-do-amap%C3%A1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200183b6nzm79uxzt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Environmental advocates are strongly opposed, arguing drilling in this ecologically delicate swath of ocean, with its unique reefs and huge stretches of mangrove forests, could bring catastrophic consequences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it8200193b6n1y8bl2x1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultra-deep water and strong currents mean any oil spill could quickly be swept across miles of ocean and coastline, and the remoteness of the drilling location from large settlements could delay clean-up operations, said Arayara\u2019s Figueiredo de Oliveira.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001a3b6na7jt3bo5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Approving drilling here mere weeks before the start of COP30 in the city of Bel\u00e9m \u2014 known as the gateway to the Amazon \u2014 presents tricky optics for Brazil, which is trying to walk a tightrope between environmental champion and fossil fuel power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001b3b6n9vhotbcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The country\u2019s mighty rivers and abundant rains mean <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/countries-and-regions\/brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most of its electricity<\/a> comes from clean hydroelectric power. Brazil\u2019s president, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, has presided over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/04\/americas\/amazon-deforestation-brazil-climate-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sharp decline in deforestation<\/a> and an increase in renewables.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001c3b6ni9redmb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Lula has always been pro-oil, Figueiredo de Oliveira said. He greeted Brazil\u2019s big pre-salt discovery, made during his previous presidential term, with the words, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/business\/god-is-brazilian-lula-20071120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">God is Brazilian<\/a>.\u201d A famous photo shows him raising oil-drenched hands at a Petrobras event in 2010.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001d3b6nui4yuif3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lula has firmly rejected claims of hypocrisy. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be an environmental leader. But Brazil is already a powerhouse \u201cwith many other economic opportunities,\u201d Ross told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001g3b6na293u2ke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The argument oil is vital for development may be easier to make in a country like Guyana, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/guyana\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around 48%<\/a> live on less than $5.50 a day, according to the World Bank.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001h3b6nlswk9dwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Guyana, which has a similar geology to Brazil\u2019s Equatorial Margin, is experiencing a remarkable oil boom. Venezuela, for example, holds the world\u2019s largest proven oil reserves, and has descended into authoritarianism and economic crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001m3b6nho7xbtmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ali insists the resource curse \u201cis not destiny\u201d and oil wealth will translate into \u201cbenefits for every household.\u201d Yet some residents say they face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/29\/climate\/guyana-oil-exxon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sky- high living costs<\/a> they blame on oil development, and the country\u2019s health outcomes remain below the regional average, according to the World Bank.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001o3b6nrn5s2984@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            South American oil is not just about deep water. Argentina\u2019s huge shale region, Vaca Muerta, often compared to the Permian Basin in Texas, holds the world\u2019s second largest reserves of shale gas and fourth largest of shale oil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001p3b6nv9ycy9lu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s Argentina\u2019s big hope for economic recovery under libertarian President Javier Milei. \u201cAlmost everything is about expanding Vaca Muerta,\u201d said Gabriel Blanco, a professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Central Buenos Aires and former national director of climate change in Argentina.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001q3b6nnxa8susr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil and gas are a very easy sell domestically, Blanco told CNN. Climate change has \u201cnever ever\u201d been on the public or political agenda, he said. Instead, \u201cthe narrative says that we are going to be rich and we\u2019re going to develop.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001r3b6nfh5m25tk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vaca Muerta is an attractive proposition for fossil fuel companies. Shale is a very different type of investment than deep-water drilling, Monaldi said. Companies can spend relatively small amounts to see if they can recover their money before putting in more. This encourages investment in Argentina, a country with \u201chigh political and regulatory risk,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001s3b6ni42nf4q0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But environmental experts fear the impacts of this booming shale field. New discoveries in Brazil may turn out to be less viable than hoped. For projects already drilling and pumping, reserves often run out earlier than anticipated, UCLA\u2019s Ross said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001v3b6n0p4kjoeh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil demand is also predicted to peak at the start of the next decade, which could mean countries that go hard on fossil fuels will find themselves locked into an unprofitable industry. \u201cThese countries are getting to the party right as the bar is closing,\u201d Ross said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001w3b6nqd5xky46@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For now, however, demand remains. \u201cWhile there\u2019s still a gap between current production and demand, there will be investment into new projects,\u201d said Fl\u00e1vio Ferreira Menten, an analyst at the research firm Rystad Energy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001x3b6n4nx429gy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are geopolitical considerations, too. If US oil production doesn\u2019t keep growing, South America \u201cbecomes much more important,\u201d Monaldi said, otherwise the world risks becoming reliant on countries such as Saudi Arabia and Russia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhp2it82001y3b6nnxcfut3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What\u2019s happening in South America is reflective of something bigger, according to Blanco.
