The Austrian painter\u2019s record is expected to be shattered again by a monumental, six-foot-tall portrait of a young heiress that was looted by the Nazis and nearly destroyed during World War II. Rarely seen for decades, it hung in the home of the Est\u00e9e Lauder heir Leonard A. Lauder until the last years of his life (he passed away in June).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau00083b6ne2x8ibv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Next week, \u201cPortrait of Elisabeth Lederer\u201d is expected to sell for above $150 million as the top lot in a sale of Lauder\u2019s collection, hosted by Sotheby\u2019s. The collection, which includes two other works by Klimt \u2014 both landscapes of Lake Attersee, estimated above $70 and $80 million \u2014 could fetch more than $400 million combined.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau00093b6n8imgsdp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the artist\u2019s works, the portrait of Lederer, the daughter of his wealthiest Viennese patrons, is less known. Completed two years before Klimt\u2019s death in 1918, the portrait features her in a gauzy, ornamental robe, surrounded by motifs from Chinese art. For many years, she kept a watchful eye over Lauder\u2019s Fifth Avenue home in New York, with only occasional outings to be shown nearby, once at the Museum of Modern Art and a handful of times at Neue Galerie New York (founded by his brother). In 2017, however, Lauder loaned it to the National Gallery of Canada for its first extended stay, where it remained until earlier this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhthje3s00163b6nzsq1l01p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While in his home, the painting was a jewel of his collection, first displayed in his living room, then relocated to his dining room to make room for a large Cubist work by Fernand L\u00e9ger, according to the art historian Emily Braun, who worked as Lauder\u2019s art advisor for nearly four decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000a3b6nqsfrhj4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe ate lunch whenever he was at home, and lunch would be at a little round table right by the painting,\u201d she said over the phone.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c-gustav-klimt-portrat-der-elisabeth-lederer-portrait-of-elisabeth-lederer.jpg\" alt=\"The portrait shows Lederer, the daughter of Klimt\u2019s wealthiest patrons, at 20 years old.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"562.5\" width=\"1000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000b3b6n65syzj0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just a short walk away, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, millions of visitors each year pass by Klimt\u2019s companion portrait of Lederer\u2019s mother, Serena. Painted around 15 years prior, the stylistic shift between the two works is apparent. Serena\u2019s portrait is wispy and spare, contrasting the bold, lush qualities of Elisabeth\u2019s composition. Yet both have the same dark, potent gaze, Braun notes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000c3b6nj6q10zzo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019ll see that Klimt is either mesmerized by (Serena\u2019s eyes), or is smart enough a painter to know to draw out this incredible coal blackness,\u201d she commented.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000e3b6nz5exun2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both paintings avoided a calamitous end during World War II, when Nazis impounded the Lederer\u2019s vast art collection for more than a decade. Many of their works by Klimt were shown in a 1943 exhibition in Vienna, then stored in Immendorf Castle, which burned down at the end of the war. But the family portraits, excluded from the exhibition because of their Jewish heritage, were separated and ultimately spared.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000f3b6nc3otnch0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Elisabeth Lederer, just 20 years old at the time she sat for Klimt, was \u201can incredibly tragic figure,\u201d Braun said. \u201cThank god this portrait survives.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c-gettyimages-600080109.jpg\" alt=\"Klimt was not the only artist to depict the young heiress. Egon Schiele, another renowned artist from Vienna, and friend to Klimt, drew her in this striking portrait.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3641\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000g3b6nxduocdgx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lederer lost everything before the war and died before it ended, at age 50, with the exact circumstances unclear. In the 1920s, as fascism began casting a long shadow, she became protestant and married a baron, but he divorced her just before World War II, the same year their young son died. Her family fled, but she remained in Vienna. She was vulnerable as a single Jewish woman, as Sotheby\u2019s noted, so she claimed that Klimt, who died in 1918, was actually her father.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000h3b6nxm8zxpzx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cShe was protected to a certain degree by this fabricated half-Christian, half-Klimt paternity, which was a ruse that was aided and abetted by her mother,\u201d Braun explained. Klimt was a close family friend and her childhood drawing instructor, but he also had a reputation \u2014 allegedly fathering a number of children out of wedlock \u2014 \u201cso this was just another example that was not far-fetched,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000j3b6nk3aafqng@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some works by Klimt have been the center of long sagas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/france-klimt-painting-intl-scli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recovery and restitution<\/a>, but in 1948, Lederer\u2019s portrait was returned to her brother, Erich, who appears in drawings and paintings by Klimt\u2019s friend and peer Egon Schiele. It remained in his possession until late in his life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhucf7kq00023b6ncqqjyu8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The art dealer Serge Sabarsky acquired Lederer\u2019s portrait in 1983, and sold it two years later to Lauder, who had taken a prudent interest in Klimt\u2019s work. In the US, Klimt was a relatively obscure figure until the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum staged a joint exhibition with Schiele in 1965. Lauder, who was Hungarian and Czech, began collecting his works in the 1970s in part due to his own family\u2019s ties to the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c-gettyimages-167876108.jpg\" alt=\"Serena Lederer, Elisabeth's mother, in her salon around 1930, standing in front of the painting.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3204\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000k3b6n69eqxrb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI can\u2019t emphasize enough that he was a real historian. He was fascinated by European history\u2026 and cultural history,\u201d Braun said of Lauder. \u201cSo on the one hand, you have his direct family connection and heritage. On the other, you have the historian\u2019s awareness of Klimt and what he represented at the apex of Viennese culture. And thirdly, you have the sheer beauty and aesthetic strength of these pictures, which he recognized immediately. He had an incredible eye.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000l3b6nkzxvxj87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Klimt may be best recognized by his golden period, during which he produced the gilded Art Nouveau icons \u201cThe Kiss\u201d and \u201cPortrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.\u201d But in the years before his death, at age 55, his geometric motifs became more fluid, his brushstrokes looser, and he was greatly influenced by East Asian art, of which he was an avid collector. The figures he painted around Lederer in her portrait were likely based on works of Chinese art that Klimt owned, according to Sotheby\u2019s, while the Chinese dragon robe she wears in the painting was meant to be a striking symbol of power. It has been said that the artist did not want to part with the painting, which took years to complete.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000m3b6nsf35ltb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For a long time, the portrait of Lederer still carried the weight of her marriage \u2014 but that changed while in Lauder\u2019s possession. Though Lederer was just 20 years old and unmarried when Klimt painted her, her portrait was called \u201cPortrait of Baroness Elisabeth Bachofen-Echt\u201d when he acquired it. Braun advised Lauder to change it, she recalled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtgxoau000n3b6nwv31vbld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI said to Leonard, \u2018It\u2019s not right.\u2019 This was commissioned while she was single.
