After opening the season with five consecutive victories, Missouri<\/a> has dropped three of its last four in SEC play, including Saturday\u2019s 38-17 home drubbing against No. 3 Texas A&M<\/a>. But Saturday\u2019s loss was particularly jarring as the Tigers\u2019 usually explosive offense was held to a season-low 284 total yards, nearly 200 yards below their season average entering the weekend.<\/p>\n

Following the loss, which saw Mizzou (6-3, 2-3 SEC) fall to No. 24 in the latest Coaches Poll and completely out of the AP Top 25, Tigers offensive lineman Cayden Green<\/a> suggested the Texas A&M defense may have had undue insight into their offensive plays.<\/p>\n

During the postgame press conference Saturday night, Green \u2014 Mizzou\u2019s 6-foot-5, 324-pound left tackle \u2014 claimed much of the Tigers\u2019 offensive issues Saturday could be attributed to the Aggies identifying and even calling out Mizzou\u2019s plays before the snap.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like they made some good adjustments, you know, they started to kind of key in on what we were doing, calling out plays at the line. So, you know, it is what it is,\u201d Green said postgame, courtesy of Michael Bratton on X\/Twitter<\/a>. \u201cYeah, a few times I think they were starting to get reads on formations and stuff, maybe stances, I don\u2019t know. Like I said, that\u2019s a really good defense. We\u2019ve just got to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Elko on if A&M\u2019s defense knew Mizzou\u2019s plays: \u2018I don\u2019t know anything about that\u2019<\/p>\n

When presented with Green\u2019s claim on Monday, second-year Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko<\/a> \u2014 who was previously the Aggies defensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher<\/a> from 2018-21 \u2014 feigned ingnorance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about that,\u201d Elko said during Monday\u2019s press conference before cracking a wry smile as he scanned the room for the next question<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of course, whether the Aggies ultimately knew Missouri\u2019s offensive plays prior to the snap is not inherently against NCAA rules, especially if A&M defensive players were able to properly identify specific tells or indications coming from how particular Tigers players were lined up. Still, just two years removed from the infamous Michigan<\/a> sign-stealing scheme that led to significant NCAA sanctions, it undoubtedly raises some concern, especially for those inside Mizzou\u2019s locker room.<\/p>\n

This also comes on the heels of claims by Ole Miss<\/a>\u2018 Lane Kiffin<\/a> that Oklahoma<\/a>\u2018s defense \u2014 led by head coach Brent Venables<\/a> \u2014 has developed legal ways of identifying opponent plays.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne, it\u2019s phenomenal prep \u2014 a film study of signals,\u201d Kiffin said last month prior to the Rebels\u2019 34-26 win in Norman<\/a>. \u201cThey do a great job of that. If you study people really well, you have enough confidence as a coach to go after those. That seems what he does and they\u2019ve got a really good beat on the plays that are coming when they\u2019re called and they do a great job of going and taking those away.\u00a0Look at the Auburn<\/a> game. I told\u00a0(now-former Tigers head coach) Hugh (Freeze)<\/a>\u00a0after the game, watching it, he might want to switch his signals. Like, it looks like they have the plays.
