Bari Weiss is once again said to be turning heads<\/a> inside CBS News with her latest move \u2014 a quiet but determined push to recruit ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman for the \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d anchor chair, according to a report.<\/p>\n

Gutman, 47, is ABC\u2019s chief national correspondent and a veteran field reporter known for his coverage of international crises, including years spent reporting from the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Though he lacks formal anchoring experience, Weiss has singled him out as a possible face for CBS\u2019s flagship newscast \u2014 a surprising choice that symbolizes the unorthodox approach she has taken since becoming editor in chief last month, according to the Status newsletter.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to a report, Gutman is being considered for the anchor role of the \u201cCBS Evening News.\u201d Instagram\/@mattgutmanabc<\/p>\n

The odds of Gutman jumping ship to the Tiffany Network remain slim given that he remains under contract with Disney-owned ABC, Status reported.<\/p>\n

Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski have been working to identify a successor for John Dickerson, who is set to exit by year\u2019s end.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dickerson has been co-anchoring the evening news alongside Maurice DuBois since late January \u2014 succeeding Norah O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n

The search has focused on both internal and external candidates, with \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d co-anchor Tony Dokoupil and O\u2019Donnell <\/a>among the in-house possibilities.<\/p>\n

But Weiss has also cast a wide net beyond the network\u2019s ranks, reaching out to high-profile journalists across Fox News, CNN and ABC.<\/p>\n

The former New York Times opinion editor who went on to found the Free Press has reportedly sent out similar feelers to Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier and CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper \u2014 all marquee names with deep television experience.<\/p>\n

Gutman, by contrast, is a career correspondent without a track record behind a nightly anchor desk.<\/p>\n

Weiss, who was installed by new CBS owner David Ellison to remake the network\u2019s news division, has already issued sweeping internal directives, taken control of booking decisions and personally phoned producers about coverage priorities.<\/p>\n

Her search for a new \u201cEvening News\u201d anchor appears central to that effort \u2014 a high-profile decision that will set the tone for the Weiss era at CBS.<\/p>\n

Weiss\u2019s eye for Gutman, insiders told Status, may stem from his reporting on Israel, a subject of deep personal interest for her.<\/p>\n

Baier is under contract with Fox News through the end of 2028. The host of \u201cSpecial Report with Bret Baier\u201d recently told podcaster Meghan McCain<\/a> that he\u2019s \u201cvery happy at Fox.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox News is property of Fox Corp \u2014 the sister company to The Post\u2019s corporate parent News Corp.<\/p>\n

The Post has sought comment from CBS News and ABC News.
