President Donald Trump boasts that his tariffs protect American industries, lure factories to the United States, raise money for the federal government and give him diplomatic leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s claiming they can finance a windfall for American families, too: He\u2019s promising a generous tariff dividend.<\/p>\n<p>The president proposed the idea on his Truth Social media platform Sunday, five days after his Republican Party lost elections in Virginia, New Jersey and elsewhere largely because of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-economy-election-democratic-wins-voter-discontent-e8e94eb6f2de702475875c1bbd80a89b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voter discontent with his economic stewardship<\/a> \u2014 specifically, the high cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The tariffs are bringing in so much money, the president posted, that \u201ca dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Budget experts scoffed at the idea, which conjured memories of the Trump administration\u2019s short-lived plan for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trrump-doge-checks-inflation-7fb8b5b004faecc213c325fcbafc7ee9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DOGE dividend checks<\/a> financed by billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s federal budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers just don\u2019t check out,\u2033 said Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Details are scarce, including what the income limits would be and whether payments would go to children.<\/p>\n<p>AP<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Estimated reading time: 1 minute EEUU.
