{"id":287169,"date":"2025-11-12T12:46:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T12:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/287169\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T12:46:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T12:46:30","slug":"a-seismic-shift-in-computing-is-on-the-horizon-and-its-not-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/287169\/","title":{"rendered":"A seismic shift in computing is on the horizon (and it\u2019s not AI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnk7iu001q27ns5fpo7xiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Creating revolutionary pharmaceutical drugs, testing new materials for cars and simulating how market scenarios can affect banks \u2014 these are just some of the tasks that could take months or years to develop, even with the most advanced computers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e00063b6n18phjrdy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But what if that timeframe could be cut down to minutes or hours?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtpbknp00013b6ns8k5wsla@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s the promise behind quantum computing, a field that\u2019s been studied for decades and has garnered increasing interest \u2014 and investments \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/01\/14\/tech\/quantum-computing-cloud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from tech giants<\/a> and startups alike.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtpbvro00033b6n6ucutvvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, IBM revealed its new experimental Loon processor and Nighthawk quantum computing chip, which can perform more complex computations than its predecessor. The past two years have seen quantum-related announcements from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/09\/tech\/google-quantum-computing-chip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, Microsoft and other tech companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e00073b6na3883xbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Quantum computing could potentially lead to a $1.3 trillion increase in value across certain industries by 2035, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/tech-and-ai\/our-insights\/quantum-technology-sees-record-investments-progress-on-talent-gap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a>, and for good reason. Experts believe quantum computing could lead to breakthroughs in fields like cryptography, finance, science and transportation, and IBM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/quantum-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> the technology could solve some problems in minutes or hours that would typically take non-quantum standard computers thousands of years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e00083b6no5whky5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s a long road ahead. Cracking quantum computing isn\u2019t a matter of upgrading existing computers. It\u2019s an entirely separate approach to computing that relies on the principles of quantum physics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e00093b6n18zrzo5c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA fighter jet is not a faster Ferrari because it has wings,\u201d said Sridhar Tayur, a professor with Carnegie Mellon University\u2019s Tepper School of Business. \u201cQuantum computing is not just a faster classical computer, because it works on a different principle.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000b3b6nq6ynk9oq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Computers store and process information using a language made up of zeros and ones, also known as \u201cbits.\u201d But quantum computing uses \u201cquantum bits,\u201d also known as \u201cqubits.\u201d Instead of being either zero or one, qubits can behave like zero or one simultaneously and exist in states between zero and one, allowing them to process information much more quickly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhun16mc00003b6n931x92t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Picture it as a flipping coin, as CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nGgOkixJxmQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anna Stewart explained<\/a>. Instead, these types of computers are ideal for solving big-picture problems involving chemistry and mathematics, making them potentially game-changing in areas such as health, environmental studies, finance, materials science and cryptography.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000d3b6n8msnxgfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            BMW Group and Airbus, for example, are working with quantum computing startup Quantinuum to research how the technology could be used in the development of fuel cells. Meanwhile, Accenture Labs, biotechnology firm Biogen and quantum computing company 1QBit are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/us-en\/case-studies\/life-sciences\/quantum-computing-advanced-drug-discovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">collaborating on research<\/a> related to drug discovery. Quantum computers can compare molecules that are much larger than the ones classical computers can compute, Accenture said on its website.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000e3b6nkg9qjmfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe big hope is that a quantum computer can simulate any sort of chemical or biological experiment you would do in the lab,\u201d said Anand Natarajan, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at MIT.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtoom1z00003b6n36vssqjk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Quantum computing could be hugely influential when it comes to cryptography and cybersecurity since it can be used to break codes used to protect data, said Natarajan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000i3b6ntnkefbjh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo that\u2019s also a major motivation, to make sure that our adversaries cannot do it and that we have this capability,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000g3b6nhlz3ad09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/entrepreneurship\/trump-administration-in-talks-to-take-equity-stakes-in-quantum-computing-firms-60ee5143?mod=tech_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported in October that a handful of quantum computing companies were discussing potential deals with the Commerce Department that would provide federal funding in exchange for an equity stake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000h3b6nh412is24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When asked for comment, a Commerce Department spokesperson told CNN that it \u201cis not currently negotiating equity stakes with quantum computing companies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000k3b6nyjwl9qk1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the industry has a wave of challenges to overcome before quantum computing can solve modern dilemmas. For example, qubits are extremely fragile, making them very susceptible to external factors like changes in temperature or light.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000l3b6n6ihk6gds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            IBM\u2019s new experimental Loon processor attempts to address this hurdle by demonstrating that the components exist to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer at scale that can function effectively even when errors are present. It\u2019s an important step because errors are inevitable given qubits are so susceptible to interference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000m3b6nb41cabth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf I just vibrate a table, I\u2019ll kill our quantum computers. Gates are the \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d quantum computers use to process information, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/physics\/introduction-new-quantum-revolution\/quantum-logic-gates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/a> describes it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000p3b6np3nzyhi2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            IBM is just one contender in the quantum computing race. Microsoft in February introduced its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/innovation\/microsofts-majorana-1-chip-carves-new-path-for-quantum-computing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Majorana 1 quantum computing chip<\/a>. That chip contains a special material the company says can create a new state of matter capable of producing more stable qubits. Google in December <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/research\/google-willow-quantum-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unveiled its Willow quantum computing chip<\/a> that it says reduces errors as more qubits are used and can do in five minutes what would take a classical computer 10 septillion years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000q3b6nvi9wt7ss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The jury is still out on exactly when quantum computing will live up to its potential.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtqtbw3000m3b6nql713ylm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Natarajan believes we\u2019re still likely a decade or two away. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/mckinsey-explainers\/what-is-quantum-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">McKinsey said<\/a> 72% of the tech executives, investors and academics it spoke with say a fully fault-tolerant quantum computer could arrive by 2035. IBM expects to reach fault-tolerant quantum computing by the end of the decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000r3b6ncw4gcirt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But when it does happen, the benefits could be tremendous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhtnmi8e000s3b6nlba0gnm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRight now, in some sense \u2026 we are trying to do brain surgery using a spoon and a fork.
