LAS VEGAS \u2014 Super agent Scott Boras used coffee and donuts as a way to describe Alex Bregman<\/a>\u2019s importance to the 2025 Red Sox<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bregman, Boras\u2019 client, opted out of the final two years of his three-year, $120 million contract<\/a> with the Red Sox. He\u2019s now a free agent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Boston, we learned a lot about Bregman in \u201825,\u201d Boras said Wednesday at the GM Meetings here at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas<\/a>. \u201cBecause in Boston prior to \u201925 they had a lot of lineup donut holes and certainly prior to \u201925, Boston has been kind of a club that has dunkin\u2019 well below the playoff line. So I think it was a bad roast in Beantown. Give the owners credit in \u201925. They went out, spent some Starbucks to bring in a Bregman blend that led them to the playoffs. I\u2019m sure the Boston fans don\u2019t want this to be just a cup of coffee and no one wants a Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boras added, \u201cI think all teams learned outside of Houston that if you want to have someone that\u2019s going to lead a championship army, there is no better general.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bregman, who will turn 32 on March 30, is not attached to a qualifying offer this offseason unlike last winter. Therefore, any team that signs him will not forfeit draft pick compensation. Boras said, \u201cWhen the qualifying offer is gone with star-level players, the volume of attention literally doubles.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took his leadership exponential and allowed it to be available to so many other teams that would normally not pursue the category of acquisition of free agent at the expense of one of their high draft picks,\u201d Boras said. \u201cI can tell you that empirically the numbers are never as good as they profess them to be about what draft picks mean. But there are instances where they\u2019ve been highly rewarding for teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

This third baseman finished 2025 with an .821 OPS. He slugged .553 with 11 home runs in 51 games (226 plate appearances) before suffering a right quad strain that caused him to miss 43 games from May 24-July 11. He slugged just .386 with seven home runs in 63 games (269 plate appearances) after being activated from the IL.<\/p>\n

Bregman was known for strong leadership in the Red Sox clubhouse and helped Boston to its first playoff berth since 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to leadership, I don\u2019t know of any starting position player that has been in the postseason eight consecutive years,\u201d Boras said. \u201cSo whatever that is in the locker room, whatever that is, and granted, there\u2019s talent on both those teams (Houston and Boston), but Boston was a real test. Bregman went in there with a lot of young players, and in a situation where they were finishing not close to (the playoffs). They were finishing in last in their division.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boras continued to stress how Bregman is able to unite a clubhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have players in there from many, many cultures, many languages. And when you see a player that\u2019s able to unite with all of them, how can you not say that that is something that\u2019s extraordinary? How can you not say that most don\u2019t have it? And how can you not say I should covet it?\u201d<\/p>\n
