TROTWOOD \u2014 The community is voicing its concerns about a new mental health hospital in the neighborhood. <\/p>\n

Trotwood City Council said it will oppose the plan for a mental health hospital at the former Hara Arena site, despite getting the money to move forward. <\/p>\n

The city held a town hall on Wednesday afternoon, and community members wanted to know if it was a done deal. <\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t give up until they start digging dirt up there,\u201d Trotwood Mayor Yvette F. Page said. <\/p>\n

City council also invited state officials to the town hall; however, none showed up. <\/p>\n

The Hara Arena was demolished in 2020; since then, redevelopment has been the goal for the lot. <\/p>\n

On Monday, the Ohio Controlling Board approved $2.5 million <\/a>for the state to buy the lot for a mental health hospital. <\/p>\n

But Trotwood officials said it\u2019s not the right spot and they have questions. <\/p>\n

\u201cExternal forces continue to have conversations about us, without us,\u201d Stephanie Kellum, deputy city manager, said. <\/p>\n

During Wednesday\u2019s discussion, Trotwood\u2019s Community Improvement Director Chad Dowing reassured the community that there are opportunities to weigh in despite Monday\u2019s approval. <\/p>\n

\u201cJust because the controlling board on Monday approved this, the transaction is not completed yet. We don\u2019t know when that is slated to happen, but the property is not transferred yet,\u201d Dowing said. <\/p>\n

Multiple people brought up safety around the hospital as a reason they don\u2019t want it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to mention the senior citizens. I don\u2019t think that it would be safe for them,\u201d Arnita Peavy said. <\/p>\n

A senior citizen who lives across the street said she wants to state to hear from the community before breaking ground. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s right when you\u2019re going to just drop this on the community like that,\u201d Verbina Fowler said. <\/p>\n

The city\u2019s next town hall is on Tuesday at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
