Rob Schneider is used to taking punches from his Hollywood peers for being a devout MAGA Republican, but little could prepare him for Robert De Niro.<\/p>\n

The comedic actor recounted to \u201cFox & Friends\u201d Thursday an unlikely run-in he had with the Oscar-winning Trump hater during February\u2019s \u201cSNL50\u201d celebration \u2014 and why he decided to steer the confrontation with love.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got to come through love, it\u2019s true,\u201d Schneider said of de-escalating the scene. \u201cThe Bible says you don\u2019t get a reward for loving your brother, you get a reward for loving people who are your enemy \u2014 and he\u2019s not my enemy. I love him, and he\u2019s angry. And the way to to really do this and to confront this is through love. You\u2019ve got to understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schneider\u2019s comments came after \u201cFox & Friends\u201d played a clip of his appearance at the hotly discussed Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley on Monday. While speaking during the event, Schneider recounted how De Niro approached him on the \u201cSNL50\u201d stage after all alum of the show were called to participate and stand together.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow could you support that schmuck?\u201d De Niro demanded at the time. \u201cTrump was a schmuck!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI looked right at him and I said, \u2018I love you! I love you!\u2019 Swear to God,\u201d Schneider said of the encounter. \u201cHe looked right at me: \u2018OK \u2026 OK.\u2019 That\u2019s the only way to handle this. We\u2019re never going to be able to out-cancel the cancel culture. They\u2019re better at it than us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Monday night event at UC Berkeley has been at the center of a media firestorm this week after anti-Turning Point protesters demonstrated outside the sold-out event and dissenting tensions boiled over into violence.<\/p>\n

Several arrests were made by city and university officers, and Attorney General Pam Bondi and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon have said the Department of Justice and FBI-led task force are investigating the protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were there to discuss things with kids, and we said what Charlie Kirk said \u2014 the only reason I was there at Berkeley was because I said to him, \u2018Let\u2019s go to the place that\u2019s the most challenging,\u2019 and he said, \u2018Well, we\u2019re going to Berkeley then.\u2019 And it was challenging,\u201d Schneider said of his Turning Point USA appearance and relationship with the conservative youth organization\u2019s late founder Charlie Kirk<\/a>. \u201cBut I wish it was challenging in a way that was really what this country is said to do, which is free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
