{"id":289395,"date":"2025-11-13T16:11:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/289395\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T16:11:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:11:21","slug":"largest-male-great-white-shark-ever-recorded-contender-pinged-off-new-jersey-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/289395\/","title":{"rendered":"Largest male great white shark ever recorded, Contender, pinged off New Jersey coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contender, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/09\/us-news\/contender-atlantic-biggest-great-white-shark-surfaces-in-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the largest male\u00a0great white shark ever recorded\u00a0in the Atlantic<\/a>, is on the move once again.<\/p>\n<p>Contender, an adult male white shark, was tagged by OCEARCH in January, off the Florida\/Georgia\u00a0coastline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At a whopping 1653 pounds and 13 feet long,\u00a0Contender\u00a0is estimated to be about 32 years old, according to OCEARCH.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/21\/us-news\/scientist-tracking-biggest-great-white-shark-ever-contender-reveals-how-to-escape-encounter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OCEARCH is a global nonprofit<\/a> that tracks some of the ocean\u2019s giants and marine ecosystems in order to collect essential data to better understand these species and the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Since January, Contender has been pinged migrating from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/12\/us-news\/great-white-shark-contender-moves-north-from-florida-to-north-carolina\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida\u00a0up the East Coast<\/a> into\u00a0Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s beginning his trek back down the coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For a ping to register, Contender\u2019s dorsal fin must break water and an Argos satellite must be nearby to record the shark\u2019s location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From April to mid-June, Contender was pinged hanging out off the coast of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/12\/us-news\/great-white-shark-contender-moves-north-from-florida-to-north-carolina\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Outer Banks in\u00a0North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest male\u00a0great white shark ever recorded\u00a0in the Atlantic Ocean is on the move once again. OCEARCH\/Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Contender, an adult male white shark, was tagged by OCEARCH in January off the coast of Florida and Georgia.  OCEARCH \/ SWNS<\/p>\n<p>At one point in June, he was\u00a0pinged roughly 22 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras.<\/p>\n<p>He continued migrating north in July and was pinged again in mid-July off the coast of\u00a0Massachusetts, according to OCEARCH data.<\/p>\n<p>After several months of no pings from Contender, the next time his location was tracked was in\u00a0late September, south of Pointe-Parent in the province of Quebec.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From Oct. 27-29, he was pinged multiple times, moving south from Canada back down toward the US for the fall migration season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At a whopping 1653 pounds and 13 feet long,\u00a0Contender\u00a0is estimated to be about 32 years old, according to OCEARCH.\u00a0 OCEARCH \/ SWNS<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two weeks later, on Tuesday, he was pinged several miles off the coast of\u00a0Atlantic City,\u00a0New Jersey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach ping adds another clue to the puzzle of white shark migration in the Western North Atlantic\u2014and our team is tracking every move,\u201d OCEARCH said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The white shark is most likely on the move back down to Florida where waters are warmer and there are more food sources, but well have to see where he shows up next.<\/p>\n<p>Contender and other sharks and sea animals like him can be tracked in real-time using the\u00a0free OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker app.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Contender, the largest male\u00a0great white shark ever recorded\u00a0in the Atlantic, is on the move once again.
