Osteocytes and the electrical signals that activate them reduce, telling your body it doesn\u2019t need to maintain such dense, strong bone. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">&#8216;Less weight also increases the signalling that activates osteoclasts, cells that break down bone,&#8217; Simmons continues. &#8216;Osteoclasts break down bone by acidifying the tissue and degrading collagen, which is what a lot of bone is made from. When osteoclast activity exceeds osteoblast (bone-building) activity \u2013 the net result is loss of bone density.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">Research supports this, as one <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38737002\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38737002\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"trial\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trial<\/a> found that taking semaglutide (one form of GLP-1) was associated with lower bone density and an increased rate of bone breakdown. That&#8217;s why <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2820308\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2820308\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"16.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"exercise\" data-node-id=\"16.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exercise<\/a> is so crucial for protecting bone during treatment \u2013 here&#8217;s exactly what happened in the study, and how exercise could help you mitigate those effects.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"body-tip css-mtq1aa emevuu60\">Women&#8217;s Health does not endorse off-label use of the medication and always advocates for lifestyle-first weight loss methods. For any questions about weight loss medications, contact your GP or pharmacist. <\/p>\n<p>The study<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">A randomised clinical trial conducted in Denmark saw 195 non-diabetic people between the ages of 18 and 65 follow an eight-week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a40772564\/how-many-calories-do-i-burn-a-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a40772564\/how-many-calories-do-i-burn-a-day\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"calorie\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calorie<\/a>-controlled diet of 800 calories per day. Then, over a year, a group of them performed moderate-to-vigorous-intensity exercise; another administered themselves 30 mg of the GLP-1 medication, liraglutide, daily; one group followed a programme combining both interventions; and the rest were placed in a placebo group. <\/p>\n<p>The results<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">After investigating bone health at people&#8217;s critical areas in their hips, spines and forearms, researchers found that those who took just the liraglutide saw their bone mineral density drop compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69379532\/glp1s-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69379532\/glp1s-exercise\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"exercise\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exercise<\/a> group, with a mean decrease of 0.013 grams of mineral per centimetre of bone at their hips and 0.016 grams per centimetre at their spine. That&#8217;s a small loss short term, but could be meaningful if it continued over time. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">By contrast, the group who both took the drug and exercised had the same bone mass density as the placebo group at their hip \u2013 the mean change was 0.006g per square centimetre \u2013 and spine \u2013 the mean change was 0.01 grams per square centimetre of bone. More weight-bearing means more osteocyte activation, and osteocytes then signal bone-building cells, osteoblasts, to build bone back up.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">Similarly, high-impact activities like jogging or running and jumping rope increase the weight and stress on your bones, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/orthoinfo.aaos.org\/en\/staying-healthy\/exercise-and-bone-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/orthoinfo.aaos.org\/en\/staying-healthy\/exercise-and-bone-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"OrthoInfo,\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OrthoInfo,<\/a> as do sports like tennis, badminton and basketball.
