{"id":291060,"date":"2025-11-14T11:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T11:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/291060\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T11:58:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T11:58:09","slug":"seal-escapes-hunting-orcas-by-climbing-onto-photographers-boat-in-puget-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/291060\/","title":{"rendered":"Seal escapes hunting orcas by climbing onto photographer\u2019s boat in Puget Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"27HQV5WFNFAJNFUMXJYSMDQ6RA\">SEATTLE \u2014 A wildlife photographer out on a whale watching trip in waters off Seattle captured dramatic video and photos of a pod of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/killer-whales-spotted-in-oregon-rivers-as-sightings-rise-along-coast-photos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/killer-whales-spotted-in-oregon-rivers-as-sightings-rise-along-coast-photos.html\">killer whales<\/a> hunting a seal that survived only by clambering onto the stern of her boat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N6JAO25XQZCJTOFHOJISKPHCLA\">Charvet Drucker was on a rented 20-foot boat near her home on an island in the Salish Sea about 40 miles northwest of Seattle when she spotted a pod of at least eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/2025\/03\/rare-killer-whales-caught-on-camera-in-oregon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/2025\/03\/rare-killer-whales-caught-on-camera-in-oregon.html\">killer whales<\/a>, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/topic\/orca\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/topic\/orca\/index.html\">orcas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IXM3T5OAKZGFBHTOBAUWZUD43M\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/2025\/10\/scientists-hope-underwater-fiber-optic-cables-can-help-save-endangered-orcas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/2025\/10\/scientists-hope-underwater-fiber-optic-cables-can-help-save-endangered-orcas.html\">orcas<\/a>\u2019 coordinated movements and tail slaps suggested they were hunting. Drucker used the zoom lens on her camera to spot a harbor seal that was trying to flee from the pod. One of her shots showed the seal flying through the air above the scrum of orcas frothing the water, and she assumed she was witnessing the seal\u2019s last moments alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZRNAB5HIANHADJEFKD2EIGBQTA\">But as the orcas got closer to the boat, Drucker and her group realized the pod was still chasing the seal. In line with wildlife boating regulations, they had cut the engine to prevent any injury to the whales. The seal clambered out of the water and onto a swimming platform at the stern of the boat near the motor \u2014 claiming it as a life raft of sorts.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The seal is in mid-air between the orcas with a splash of water in the air.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/253CIIZXPZD3XCXRCN6UANX3FU.jpg\"  \/>In this photo provided by Charvet Drucker, a seal leaps in the air to evade Orca whales Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, in the Saratoga passage between Camano and Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, Wash.Charvet Drucker via AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PLWBSKBEG5AZ5EF2PO64WTGBB4\">Wildlife regulations also prohibit touching or interfering with the seal, but Drucker began filming video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TTYV4PG5QJFAVICYLS5HEMOXNE\">\u201cYou poor thing,\u201d Drucker can be heard saying, as the seal looks up at her. \u201cYou\u2019re good, just stay, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZTZUOZRYPFDVPPZ2HXKAZ44IPE\">The orcas did not give up immediately, but instead appeared to team up to rock the boat and make the seal fall off. Drucker\u2019s cellphone video shows the orcas lining up and moving in on the boat with staggered dives to create waves. The \u201cwave-washing\u201d technique has been documented since by scientists since at least the 1980s, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZV4FZK2VBFCGFOSM534LUKPQCA\">The seal on Drucker\u2019s boat slid off at least once, but managed to climb back on, and the orcas swam away after about 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The white with black spotted seal's eyes appear to almost be closed and mouth is in the shape of a smile as it rests on the boat.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/OIL2CEM5EBDPVNCICPNPPI2DLY.jpg\"  \/>In this photo provided by Charvet Drucker, a seal rests on her boat in the Saratoga passage between Camano and Whidbey Island, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, north of Seattle, Wash.Charvet Drucker via AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OWHTYHXXHBECJGQNGJWIXS2JKY\">Drucker has photographed dead seals in the mouths of orcas before, and she says she\u2019s generally happy when the whales get to eat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LZV6RUENHVE7RD7EYHFWIMB3JI\">\u201cI\u2019m definitely Team Orca, all day, every day. But once that seal was on the boat, I kind of turned (into) Team Seal,\u201d she said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ASF5ANZFGNGI5GLS5K3JPHCP6E\">The killer whales that hunt seals and a diverse set of marine animals in the area are known as Bigg\u2019s or \u201ctransient\u201d orcas.
