It\u2019s rolling out \u201cover the coming months\u201d with WhatsApp\u2019s level of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) maintained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdy.chat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BirdyChat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/haiket.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haiket<\/a> will be the first third-party services to implement messaging interoperability with WhatsApp. No, we haven\u2019t heard of them either, but that\u2019s what leveling the playing field looks like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">WhatsApp users in Europe will eventually see a notification in the settings tab that will explain how to opt-in to third party messaging. It will work in WhatsApp for iOS and Android, but not on desktops, web, or tablets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta says that \u201cthird-party messaging apps must use the same level of E2EE as WhatsApp,\u201d and Meta can\u2019t see encrypted messages in transit. Content can include text, photos, videos, voice messages, and documents. It will also only work for users with a WhatsApp account registered to phone numbers in regions covered by the DMA, <a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/916543719558426\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/6\/24237753\/whatsapp-messenger-third-party-chat-eu-dma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta previewed<\/a> what third-party integration with WhatsApp and Messenger will look like. Notably, users will be presented with the choice of receiving third-party messages in a separate folder or combined inbox. Meta also said it would remind users \u201ceach time a new third-party messaging app becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta warns that third-party apps \u201cmight handle your data differently\u201d than it would.
