Chinese internet giants will drive the continued adoption of AI<\/a> in the country despite the risk of semiconductor<\/a> chip shortages.<\/p>\n

Chatbot Demand<\/p>\n

According to a report from investment bank JPMorgan (JPM)<\/a>, more Chinese people will continue to use AI features in the next 12 months despite the \u201cabsence of clear evidence of AI monetization in China.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex Yao, co-head of Asia-Pacific technology, media and telecoms equity research, said China\u2019s Big Tech tigers are seeing their chatbot apps such as Tencent Holdings\u2019 (TCEHY)<\/a> Yuanbao and ByteDance\u2019s Doubao gain traction.<\/p>\n

He expects companies like Tencent and Alibaba Group (BABA)<\/a> to focus on integrating AI features into their established \u201ckiller apps,\u201d such as messaging platform WeChat and the online marketplace Taobao.<\/p>\n

Such efforts would generate \u201ca lot of token consumption,\u201d which would boost revenues for cloud service vendors.<\/p>\n

Export Controls<\/p>\n

Chip challenges caused by U.S. export controls have posed problems for Chinese AI companies. Reports this week suggested that the shortfall is so deep that Beijing is now stepping in to control<\/a> how production from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) is shared. Reports also say that Chinese officials are giving priority to Huawei Technologies, which uses SMIC\u2019s chips to power its AI products.<\/p>\n

However, JPMorgan said it would not be a \u201csignificant hurdle\u201d in the short-term. Chinese GPU manufacturers were achieving \u201crapid improvements\u201d in chip quality and many tech companies had accumulated \u201cexcessive inventory\u201d from the previous year, said Gokul Hariharan, co-head of Asia-Pacific technology, media and telecoms equity research.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Chip shortage] is an issue, but I don\u2019t see it as a key bottleneck\u201d over the next 12 months, Yao added.<\/p>\n

JPMorgan predicted continued earnings-per-share upgrades over the next two to three quarters, particularly in the semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n

The internet giants are also likely to see their shares continuing to do well after a strong 2025 to date:<\/p>\n

\u201cConcerns about an AI bubble will still be there, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to completely go away,\u201d Hariharan said. \u201cDemand is still very strong, and that will probably prolong the cycle through 2026 and most of 2027 as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
