November is flying by at a steady clip, and this weekend is one of the busiest we’ve seen yet for movie debuts. Whether you’re checking out the newest releases on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, or more of the best streaming services<\/a>, there’s plenty of must-watch new movies to curl up on the couch to. But with so much on offer, it’s hard to even know where to start.<\/p>\n

That’s why each week you’ll find me combing through all the new movies on streaming to highlight the best of the bunch, so you don’t waste your precious streaming time with a dud. This week, that includes “Hereditary” director Ari Aster’s new neo-Western “Eddington,” which has audiences divided on HBO Max. Disney Plus subscribers can catch Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis getting up to more body-swapping chaos with “Freakier Friday,” while Peacock just got a more action-packed sequel with the Bob Odenkirk-led “Nobody 2.”<\/p>\n

For even more thrills, Prime Video’s newest buddy action comedy “Playdate” looks like a promising family movie night contender. And while Netflix got a slew of Christmas movies this week, if it’s too early for holiday cheer, there’s a new comedy drama “Nouvelle Vague” that’s shaping up to be one of the streaming service’s best originals of the year. Disney continues to scrape the bottom of the IP barrel with it latest decades-in-the-making sequel, “Freakier Friday.” A follow-up to 2003’s “Freaky Friday” (which was itself a remake), Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reunite alongside new cast members like Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, and “The Good Place\u2019s” Manny Jacinto for another hilarious body-swapping debacle.<\/p>\n

This time around, Anna (Lohan) is about to tie the knot with Eric (Jacinto), but their teen daughters Harper (Butters) and Lily (Hammons) aren’t exactly thrilled to become one big happy family. When a bachelorette party palm reading with Anna\u2019s mom, Tess (Curtis), takes a turn for the weird, all four wake up to discover they\u2019ve swapped bodies. “Freakier Friday” sticks close to the original\u2019s tried-and-true formula, but with enough charm to make for a breezy family movie night watch.<\/p>\n

Bob Odenkirk’s turn as an action star in 2021’s “Nobody” was entertaining, don’t get me wrong, but I can’t imagine many were clambering for a sequel. But even though nobody asked for “Nobody 2”, I’m not mad about it. With a lean 90-minute runtime, this action thriller manages not to overstay its welcome, delivering just the right dose of gory goodness and crowd-pleasing mayhem.<\/p>\n

Odenkirk returns as retired assassin Hutch Mansell, who tries to leave his violent past behind by taking his family on a much-needed vacation. Of course, it’s not long before their island time turns into violent time as Hutch clashes with the town\u2019s crooked sheriff (Colin Hanks), who\u2019s secretly in league with a ruthless crime boss, Lendina (Sharon Stone). If you’re craving an encore of what made “Nobody” such a blast, this sequel hits the spot with another fiery, feel-good romp.<\/p>\n

I wasn’t a fan of “Hereditary” director Ari Aster’s last surreal epic, “Beau is Afraid,” and his latest seems like another bold swing that’s got audiences split. While it’s wildly ambitious, some viewers have criticized this neo-Western for its uneven tone and social commentary that says a lot without actually saying much. Now that it’s streaming on HBO Max, it\u2019s the perfect chance to see what all the fuss is about.<\/p>\n

Set during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, it stars long-time Aster collaborator Joaquin Phoenix as Joe Cross, an anti-mask sheriff who refuses to comply with lockdown orders from Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). When Joe throws his hat into the upcoming mayoral election, their rivalry takes a violent turn as hysteria and misinformation pit neighbor against neighbor.<\/p>\n

Between “Heads of State,” “Code 3” and “The Pickup,” Prime Video has been on a roll with buddy action comedies this year. In its latest “Playdate,” Kevin James stars as newly minted stepdad Brian, who’s doing his best to push through the awkwardness of bonding with his stepson Lucas (Benjamin Pajak).<\/p>\n

He sets up a playdate with fellow stay-at-home dad Jeff (Alan Ritchson) and his son CJ (Banks Pierce), only to discover Jeff is hiding some pretty big secrets when mercenaries crash their lunch plans. Now Brian must channel his inner action hero to keep his son safe or they both might not survive the day. While it’s no Best Picture material, “Playdate” is the kind of high-energy family action flick that makes Prime Video’s line-up this month worth checking out.<\/p>\n

Cinephiles have reason to celebrate this week with the “Before” trilogy and “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater’s latest film arriving on Netflix. “Nouvelle Vague” is a captivating tribute to the French New Wave of the late \u201950s and early \u201960s that recounts the production of one of cinema’s most storied debuts: Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless.”<\/p>\n

Newcomer Guillaume Marbeck stars as Godard, with Zoey Deutch as actress Jean Seberg and Adrien Rouyard as Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut, the film\u2019s writer and soon-to-be legendary director. Clearly born out of love for the era, “Nouvelle Vague” throws viewers back in time to 1959 Paris at the moment one bold director is on the verge of changing cinema forever, though none of his collaborators realize it yet.<\/p>\n
