{"id":293144,"date":"2025-11-15T12:06:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T12:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/293144\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T12:06:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T12:06:20","slug":"breaking-down-the-looming-house-vote-on-the-epstein-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/293144\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking down the looming House vote on the Epstein files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhd71p00ev2cqjcwma70gz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This coming week is expected to deliver the moment that House Speaker Mike Johnson has been forestalling in one form or another for nearly four months: when the House votes on whether to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00033b6nueuvg17x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was way back in late July that Johnson sent the House off on a five-week recess <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/24\/politics\/house-republicans-epstein-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a day early to quell a growing Republican revolt<\/a>. He later kept the House out of session for an extraordinarily long time during the shutdown. This carried the benefit \u2013 whether it was the express purpose or not \u2013 of giving him an excuse not to swear in the decisive 218th member to force the vote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00043b6npjo6tdcx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump, too, clearly did not want this vote. He waged an unsuccessful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/12\/politics\/trump-administration-meeting-house-effort-epstein-document-release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">11th-hour campaign<\/a> on Wednesday to flip the handful of Republicans who signed the \u201cdischarge petition.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00053b6n6ddlenjp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the vote now looms, with Johnson announcing plans to schedule it for next week.  So, what happens next? What could the vote mean? And what are the political dynamics?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00063b6nsyanczwr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s hardly the end of the road, but it\u2019s clearly a significant moment that could set the Epstein saga off on a new trajectory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00073b6njxb1l1zz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first thing to note is that, despite the pushback, this vote isn\u2019t really the destination. It\u2019s not like the House passes the bill, and suddenly the Justice Department releases the full Epstein case files. The bill would still need to be passed by the Senate and signed by the president.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns00083b6nlnmwhzwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s clearly a reason Johnson and the administration didn\u2019t want the vote. The fear here seems to be that it 1) creates a very difficult decision for many Republican congressmembers, and it 2) could apply pressure on the Senate and the administration to follow suit \u2013 particularly if it passes by a large margin in the House.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763208379_999_still-22113602-6893433-333-still.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. CNN reported this week that House GOP leadership is expecting mass defections. The lead GOP co-sponsor of the discharge petition, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, isn\u2019t exactly lowering expectations, either. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/politics\/epstein-files-house-vote-johnson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set a threshold for success at two-thirds<\/a> of the House, or nearly 290 votes, if all members are present.That\u2019s the point at which enough members support the measure that it could overcome a presidential veto.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000a3b6n1sqcyjz0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we are somehow able to get two-thirds vote here in the House, [that] puts a lot of pressure on the Senate, and also, if the Senate does pass it, that\u2019s a very serious step for the president,\u201d Massie told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000b3b6n5wzndfkb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That would indeed be a very symbolic victory. It would not only demonstrate that a wide, bipartisan majority of the House wants the files released, but it would suggest the chamber could actually override Trump\u2019s attempt to block that \u2013 whether or not it would ever come to that.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000c3b6nk5jxl7wv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It would require about 75 out of the 219 House Republicans, if every Democrat voted in favor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000d3b6n6ox3wo0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several Republicans have already said they will vote for the bill, despite not having supported Massie\u2019s discharge petition. (Only four Republicans signed the petition.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000e3b6n572tdffy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And we\u2019re also seeing how this all could start to register in the Senate, with Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana quickly signaling Thursday that the GOP should just go for full transparency. Kennedy had previously voted against an early effort by Senate Democrats to force the release of the files.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gettyimages-2245415171.jpg\" alt=\"Sen. John Kennedy speaks to reporters in Washington, DC on November 9.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000f3b6nbjt671kl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI just don\u2019t think this issue is going to go away until that issue is addressed and answered to the American people\u2019s satisfaction,\u201d Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/audio\/podcasts\/the-arena-with-kasie-hunt\/episodes\/40886cf0-6cdf-11f0-995b-3f54ca628043\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN\u2019s Kasie Hunt<\/a>. \u201cAnd I may end up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/29\/politics\/trump-ai-generated-video-schumer-jeffries-shutdown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a sombrero on my head<\/a> for saying that, but that\u2019s the way I see it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000g3b6n9ptbhlk8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These House members clearly face a difficult vote, with compelling dynamics pushing them in both directions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000h3b6nf8wwau2o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the dynamics pushing them to vote no are loyalty to Trump, which is the coin of the realm in today\u2019s GOP. Trump has made it very clear that he will remember how these members vote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000i3b6nwe769x4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnly a very bad, or stupid, Republican would fall into that trap,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115538279653817159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted Wednesday on social media<\/a>. He added that there \u201cshould be no deflections to Epstein or anything else.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000j3b6n3ciz4z8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Voting for the bill would be a significant rebuke of Trump and Johnson, who explicitly fought against this. It would suggest that the other measures taken \u2013 such as the House Oversight Committee\u2019s release of some Epstein materials obtained from his estate \u2013 just weren\u2019t good enough. Congressional Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/29\/politics\/congress-rebuke-trump-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">almost never buck Trump<\/a> like this.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000k3b6nm2wipeb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            GOP leadership also has reason to try and limit defections, because of the level of pressure it could apply to the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000l3b6np2xtm0x1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But on the other side are plenty of dynamics pressuring members to vote for the bill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000m3b6nsnphf1op@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The big one is how they would explain the vote to their constituents. The fact is that Americans overwhelmingly want all the files, they\u2019re upset with the lack of transparency thus far, and they expect that the files contain significant information.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gettyimages-2232914320.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. Capitol in Washington, DC. on September 3, announcing the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which calls for the release of all unclassified documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000n3b6nudjjhuxi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fully 77% of Americans wanted all the files released, as long as victims\u2019 names are redacted, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/NPR_PBS-News_Marist-Poll_USA-NOS-and-Tables_R2202509291454.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NPR-PBS-Marist College poll<\/a> in September. An earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/cbsnews_20250720_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS News-YouGov poll<\/a> showed 89% said the government should release all its information.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000o3b6nx24xc7qt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/politics\/donald-trump-epstein-political-danger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polling<\/a> has shown overwhelming majorities of Americans think damaging information about powerful people is contained in the files and that the government hasn\u2019t been transparent enough.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000p3b6n1jp25jnk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Given all of that, voting against releasing the records risks making you look like you\u2019re part of a cover-up \u2013 a cover-up for pedophilia. And what if the stuff is actually going to come out anyway, and maybe even includes some significant information? Who wants to be one of the people who voted against that transparency?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000q3b6n0iw1prmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And that gets at another key dynamic here. At some point, Republicans who once upon a time led the charge to release the Epstein files \u2013 at least until the Trump administration reversed itself this summer \u2013 might just reason this is going to happen the easy way or the hard way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000r3b6nqoukpjyu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN\u2019s Annie Grayer and Kristen Holmes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-government-shutdown-news-11-14-25?post-id=cmhz1u47u000d3b6pdn0b992h\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Friday on a Trump ally on Capitol Hill who told the president directly that they questioned the strategy to keep delaying and downplaying things.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhzhsyns000s3b6ngkyizege@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Indeed, Trump, who hasn\u2019t been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, in many ways <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/politics\/donald-trump-epstein-political-danger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seems to be seeding suspicion<\/a> about what the files might show about his own proximity to the convicted sex offender by fighting the transparency that his administration once promised.
