Last week, Tesla shareholders approved an enormous $1 trillion pay package<\/a> for its controversial CEO Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

While that may sound like an Earth-shattering amount of cash, the compensation plan will only be paid out if the EV maker achieves some extremely ambitious company goals \u2014 like delivering 20 million Tesla vehicles and one million robots over the next ten years.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to mention boosting the company\u2019s $1.4 trillion market value to an astronomical $8.5 trillion.<\/p>\n

And given the firm\u2019s current state, with sales continuing to plummet<\/a> and Tesla posting its fourth consecutive quarterly decline<\/a> last month, that\u2019s going to be an even steeper uphill battle than at face value.<\/p>\n

It sounds like nerves inside the company are shaky as well. As Business Insider reports<\/a>, Tesla\u2019s AI chief Ashok Elluswamy beat the war drum during an all-hands meeting last month, warning the company\u2019s AI teams that 2026 will be the \u201chardest year\u201d of their lives, a dressing down that was reportedly meant to be a \u201crallying cry.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI division leaders set extremely aggressive timelines for the company\u2019s humanoid robot, Optimus, which is reportedly already lagging far behind Musk\u2019s lofty production goals<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s former Optimus lead, Milan Kovac, left the company in June<\/a>. Elluswamy assumed a leadership role on the project earlier this year, per BI.<\/p>\n

The other half of Musk\u2019s reimagined vision for Tesla is the firm\u2019s robotaxi, whose rollout has also been mired in chaos<\/a>. Glaring issues plaguing the autonomous driving software have resulted in several accidents<\/a> already. A truly self-driving car that requires no intervention from the driver still appears to be years away, despite Musk\u2019s frequent promises<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Put simply, it\u2019s no surprise that Elluswamy is warning of tough times ahead, with workers expected to deliver on some enormously ambitious goals, once again highlighting the company\u2019s already brutal working conditions<\/a> and Musk\u2019s infamously extreme<\/a> and often cruel work ethic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As critics accuse Tesla of abandoning private car sales<\/a> \u2014 its bread and butter since its inception \u2014 Musk is doubling down on robots and AI instead.<\/p>\n

During last month\u2019s earnings call, Musk admitted<\/a> that getting to an \u201cannualized rate of one million\u201d Optimus robots may \u201ctake a while\u201d since production will \u201cmove as fast as the slowest, dumbest, least lucky thing out of 10,000 unique items.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Musk has claimed that Optimus \u201ccould become the largest product in history.\u201d Per the mercurial entrepreneur, about 80 percent<\/a> of the automaker\u2019s value will come from the robot.<\/p>\n

Musk also predicted that Tesla is planning to roll out robotaxis in \u201capproximately eight to ten major metropolitan areas\u201d by the end of this year, a moonshot, according to skeptics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In short, it\u2019s no wonder Tesla executives are warning that 2026 may prove incredibly challenging as the pressure now falls on those responsible for actually delivering on all these extremely ambitious timelines.<\/p>\n

Whether Tesla will succeed remains to be seen. For now, investors are seemingly convinced of Musk\u2019s reimagining of the carmaker, propping up a \u201csky-high\u201d valuation<\/a> despite plunging revenues.<\/p>\n
