{"id":293447,"date":"2025-11-15T15:41:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T15:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/293447\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T15:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T15:41:10","slug":"japan-bear-attacks-canada-issues-travel-advisory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/293447\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan bear attacks: Canada issues travel advisory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Due to a reported uptick in bear attacks in northern Japan, the federal government is warning travellers to be vigilant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/destinations\/japan\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/destinations\/japan\">In an updated travel advisory<\/a> shared Friday, the federal government warned Canadian residents of \u201can increased presence of bears\u201d in northern Japan, with sightings in urban areas, resorts and hiking trails, with some incidents having \u201cresulted in casualties.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf you plan on visiting northern Japan &#8230; always be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant; avoid walking alone in areas where bears have been sighted, (and) follow the warnings or alerts issued by local authorities,\u201d the advisory said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/article\/japan-to-enlist-retired-cops-soldiers-to-cull-bears\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/article\/japan-to-enlist-retired-cops-soldiers-to-cull-bears\/\">According to AFP<\/a>, 13 people have been killed by bears across Japan since April. The Japanese government is requesting former soldiers and police officers to assist in culling the animals. Bears have been reported in residential areas, \u201croaming near schools and rampaging in supermarkets.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The advisory warns about bears in the northern Akita, Niigata, and Hokkaido regions. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pref.hokkaido.lg.jp\/ks\/skn\/higuma\/english.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pref.hokkaido.lg.jp\/ks\/skn\/higuma\/english.html\">government of Hokkaido<\/a> advises people to make noise, travel in groups during daylight hours, take food and garbage home, avoid bear droppings and footprints, and research bear sightings before entering an area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Japanese military has been deployed to help deal with the bear problem. (Muneyoshi Someya\/Kyodo News via AP) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Thursday, Japanese media reported that the country revised a law to allow police to use rifles to shoot bears. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEach (region) will have two teams consisting of a commanding officer, a liaison to local authorities and two snipers,\u201d according to the Japanese newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251113\/p2g\/00m\/0na\/011000c\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251113\/p2g\/00m\/0na\/011000c\">The Mainichi<\/a>.
