And is there any point in purchasing an expensive, ultra-high-def TV for an optimal in-home viewing experience?<\/p>\n<p>These questions were recently explored by researchers from the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reality_Labs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta Reality Labs<\/a>, developers of virtual and augmented reality technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings suggest that, at the distance between the sofa and TV in the average UK living room, the human eye <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-025-64679-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cannot resolve<\/a> all the pixels presented by ultra-high-def 4K or 8K TVs.<\/p>\n<p>So these screens, it seems, don&#8217;t provide any noticeable benefits over a lower resolution 2K television of the same size (44 inches).<\/p>\n<p>To reach that conclusion, the researchers tested viewers&#8217; ability to perceive specific on-screen features, such as patterns with fine gradations, in various conditions: in shades of color or grey, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cl.cam.ac.uk\/research\/rainbow\/projects\/display_calc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">different distances from the TV<\/a>, and when viewed straight-on or via peripheral vision.<\/p>\n<p>If the viewers \u2013 18 of them, aged 13 to 46 years \u2013 could see the lines in the image, it indicated that their eyes could resolve detail at that level.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/41467_2025_64679_Fig1_HTML-642x377.jpeg\" alt=\"Can The Human Eye See All The Details of an Expensive High-Def TV?\" width=\"642\" height=\"377\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180713\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The experimental set-up, and a sample of the visual patterns (right) viewers were presented with. (Ashraf et al., Nat. Commun., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the researchers went beyond measuring simple resolution. To get a fuller picture of the limits of our eyesight, they also analyzed pixels per degree (ppd), which is a way of measuring how many individual pixels can be crammed into each degree of your field of vision.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists had thought the human eye could perceive details at 60 ppd, based on the widely accepted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clinical-trial-restored-sight-to-20-people-with-corneas-made-from-an-unlikely-source\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20\/20 vision standard<\/a> set by the Snellen wall chart, with its well-known rows of letters, each smaller than the last.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762559827_648_Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the Snellen chart is a bit of an ophthalmological  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dinosaurs\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73069\" data-postid=\"180709\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dinosaur<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This measurement has been widely accepted,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/is-your-ultra-hd-tv-worth-it-scientists-measure-the-resolution-limit-of-the-human-eye\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> University of Cambridge vision researcher Maliha Ashraf, &#8220;but no one had actually sat down and measured it for modern displays, rather than a wall chart of letters that was first developed in the 19th century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In this new study, Ashraf and colleagues found that the human eye has a higher resolution limit than previously suggested, although this limit varies by color. In grey, it&#8217;s 94 ppd; in green and red, it&#8217;s 89 ppd. But in yellow and violet, it plummets to 53 ppd.<\/p>\n<p>Given these findings, it appears that TV design may have reached a point of diminishing returns, at least in terms of resolution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/41467_2025_64679_Fig3_HTML-642x627.jpeg\" alt=\"Can The Human Eye See All The Details of an Expensive High-Def TV?\" width=\"642\" height=\"627\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180714\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Filters can be applied to digital images to improve our viewing experience. (Ashraf et al., Nat Commun, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Size-wise, bigger TVs will always be coveted. Yet the researchers hope that with these new insights, manufacturers will begin designing displays that meet the resolution capabilities of a higher proportion of people \u2013 say, 95 percent \u2013 rather than the previously assumed average observer.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s not only our eyes that place limits on what we clearly see, but also our brains. Human senses are synergistic, and our ocular resolution depends on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/watch-here-s-how-eyes-evolved-500-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the eyes and the brain<\/a>, as well as their interactions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our brain doesn&#8217;t actually have the capacity to sense details in colour very well, which is why we saw a big drop-off [in ppd] for colour images, especially when viewed in peripheral vision,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/is-your-ultra-hd-tv-worth-it-scientists-measure-the-resolution-limit-of-the-human-eye\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Rafa\u0142 Mantiuk, a computer scientist at the University of Cambridge and senior author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our eyes are essentially sensors that aren&#8217;t all that great, but our brain processes that data into what it thinks we should be seeing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a reminder that these aspects of our seemingly limited vision have evolved, survived and proliferated because they&#8217;re good enough, not because they&#8217;re perfect.<\/p>\n<p>If manufacturers are intent on capturing our attention and holding our gaze, then they might do well to design screens to suit more people&#8217;s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>This research is published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-64679-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Communications<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s the retinal resolution of the human eye, or how many pixels can we actually perceive?
