\n\tOscar-winning director Gore Verbinski<\/a> said he\u2019s \u201ctroubled\u201d with the course generative artificial intelligence<\/a> is on, saying the technology is lopsidedly focused on stripping humanity of its desire to engage with the arts rather than solving tangible real-world problems.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe filmmaker, who is behind the anticipated sci-fi action-comedy Good Luck, Have Fun, Don\u2019t Die, told Dexerto<\/a> he believes AI is \u201cinescapable. It\u2019s coming. It\u2019s inevitable. I\u2019m both apprehensive and excited, [but] it\u2019s terrifying at the same time, and I think the title of our film is sort of a mantra right now. You can either ignore it, or you can be afraid of it, or you can surf it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cThis is a revolution, but it\u2019s not windmills or the steam engine or personal computers. This thing is a digital organism that we\u2019re birthing, and I think it\u2019s inheriting some of our primal flaws in its source code.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking more specifically about the usage of AI in the filmmaking process, Verbinski \u2014 whose last pic, A Cure for Wellness, was released nearly a decade ago \u2014 questioned why the tech needs to come at a cost to artists.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cInstead of trying to solve cancer or take us to Mars or these things that could solve some genuine issues, it\u2019s going after storytelling, it\u2019s going after illustrations, it\u2019s gonna write your song for you. It\u2019s like saying it\u2019s gonna breathe for you, it\u2019s gonna fuck for you. It\u2019s gonna take away \u2026 There\u2019s certain things we need to do as humans, like sit around a campfire and tell each other stories. Why is it taking away the things that make us most fundamentally human? Why not go after the jobs we don\u2019t want to do?\u201d the Rango helmer said.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked where he believes the invention is headed, he responded: \u201cI think there\u2019s no doubt that you\u2019re going to be able to go, \u2018I want to watch a movie, surprise me. I want to watch a movie that\u2019s, you know, The Godfather with talking frogs,\u2019 and it\u2019s gonna be there, it\u2019s gonna be good, there\u2019s no doubt. But what did it just take away? Isn\u2019t there something in us that makes us want to create whatever you love? You love fly fishing, it\u2019ll fly fish for you. \u2018No, I mean, I want to go fly fishing!\u2019 I think it\u2019s weird to take away what makes us human.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEventually, the Pirates of the Caribbean director theorized, AI would run into learning limitations, with large language models having to be trained on previous iterations of AI outputs and consequently regurgitating a worse product.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think maybe there\u2019s gonna be something really interesting happening, because it\u2019s ingested so much from the Internet, and it\u2019s spitting back so much stuff, so fast, back into the internet, that it\u2019s starting to drink its own piss, and I think you\u2019re gonna see that sort of two degree little turn,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna get quite surreal, really quick. I want to buy an Encyclopedia Britannica pre-AI, to just have. Like, we used to know this shit!<\/p>\n

\n\tGood Luck, Have Fun, Don\u2019t Die \u2014 written by Matthew Robinson \u2014 follows a man from the future (Sam Rockwell) who travels to the past to recruit a group of hapless Angelenos at a diner (the iconic Norms) in the fight against AI armageddon. Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Pe\u00f1a, Zazie Beetz and Juno Temple also star<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, for which you can view the trailer here<\/a>, will bow in theaters Feb. 13, moved back a couple of weeks after its initial Jan. 30 slated release.<\/p>\n

\n\tHollywood has been locked in a tense stalemate on the usage of AI in the filmmaking process, with stories about\u00a0artificial intelligence \u201cactress\u201d Tilly Norwood (and ensuing backlash)<\/a>,\u00a0launch of AI-powered platform Showrunner<\/a>, Natasha Lyonne\u2019s forthcoming AI-supplemented directorial debut<\/a>, among many others, dominating the discourse.
