\n\tJames Pickens Jr. has revealed he\u2019s been diagnosed with prostate cancer<\/a>. The news comes in tandem with his Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/a> character, Dr. Richard Webber, sharing he has cancer, which was revealed toward the end of the Nov. 13 episode.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with Black Health Matters<\/a>, the actor opened up about his diagnosis and how it has affected several family members.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family. My father had it,\u201d Pickens said. \u201cHe had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn\u2019t gotten it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor continued: \u201cI\u2019ve got a 90-year-old first cousin, who\u2019s still alive, actually; he had it. His son has it. A couple of his brothers had it. No one, as far as I know, has succumbed to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPickens \u2014 \u00a0who has starred on\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u00a0since the show\u2019s premiere in 2005, appearing across all 22 seasons \u2014 said he has been proactive about getting health screenings. He began PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing when he was 41. He is now age 73. \u00a0He stressed that prostate cancer is \u201chighly treatable,\u201d but that \u201cearly detection is the key\u201d in last week\u2019s Grey\u2019s Anatomy episode via a PSA.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy urologist said, \u2018Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage,\u201d he told Black Health Matters. \u201cWe were able to catch it so early because you were being tested.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2024, during his annual physical exam when he also underwent PSA testing, his numbers appeared in normal range. But earlier this year, his numbers had ticked up so he was sent for an MRI, which a urologist said revealed \u201csomething suspicious.\u201d A biopsy later revealed a tumor, which had not spread and he underwent a prostatectomy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take.\u00a0I do have a rare variant that you don\u2019t see very often. They wanted to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on it,\u201d Pickens said. \u201cIt was rare enough that they wanted to make sure that they were crossing all the T\u2019s and dotting all their I\u2019s.
