{"id":295882,"date":"2025-11-16T22:13:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T22:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/295882\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T22:13:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T22:13:24","slug":"doctors-at-utahs-intermountain-perform-milestone-heart-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/295882\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors at Utah&#8217;s Intermountain perform milestone heart surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SALT LAKE CITY \u2014 Mark Maw learned he had a serious problem with his heart seventeen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really tired \u2014 no energy,\u201d he said. \u201cMy heart doctor said, \u2018You got a leaky heart valve.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maw underwent open-heart surgery to repair it. Years later, doctors found an aneurysm on the aorta \u2014 the main artery carrying blood from the heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was like a walking time bomb,\u201d said Mark\u2019s wife, Yvonne Maw. \u201cIf your aorta bursts, you have no chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of his age and medical history, traditional open-heart surgery carried serious risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s tough the first time around, tougher the second time around,\u201d said Dr. John Doty, cardiothoracic surgeon at Intermountain Health.<\/p>\n<p>Surgeons at Intermountain Health offered Maw something new \u2014 a less invasive way to repair the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/aortic-aneurysm\/your-aorta-the-pulse-of-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">aorta<\/a>, without opening his chest.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Doty and Dr. Evan Brownie, co-directors of Intermountain\u2019s Aortic Program, inserted a catheter through the groin to place a first-of-its-kind ascending stent graft, designed to seal off the weakened section of Mark\u2019s aorta from the inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this can offer a solution that is safe, rapid and effective to get them out of that actue-life threatening condition, it\u2019s going to be one of the most revolutionary changes that we\u2019ll see in our lifetimes in the field of aortic surgery,\u201d said Brownie, vascular surgeon at Intermountain Health.<\/p>\n<p>Maw was the first patient in Utah to undergo this procedure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told our grandkids, \u2018Grandpa\u2019s making history,&#8217;\u201d Yvonne Maw said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s doing well post-surgery and is grateful for a second chance at life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t realize how lucky I am,\u201d Mark Maw said. \u201cTake care of your heart.
