\n Lionsgate Films\u2019 \u201cNow You See Me: Now You Don\u2019t\u201d stole the show at the domestic box office this weekend.\n <\/p>\n

\n The third installment of the \u201cNow You See Me\u201d franchise earned $21.3 million. The first \u201cNow You See Me\u201d opened in 2013 to more than $29 million, according to Box Office Mojo, and \u201cNow You See Me 2\u201d opened to $22 million in 2016.\n <\/p>\n

\n Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of analytics firm Box Office Theory, credited some of the heist movie\u2019s success this weekend to Lionsgate\u2019s advertising, which included fan-like edits posted to social media.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cTheir marketing team can really be commended for bringing out a very strong young female audience,\u201d he said, adding that the studio reported half of ticket buyers were women and a \u201chealthy amount\u201d were over 25 years old.\n <\/p>\n

\n Coming in behind \u201cNow You See Me: Now You Don\u2019t\u201d was Paramount Pictures\u2019 \u201cThe Running Man\u201d ($17 million), which was the second adaptation of a 1982 Stephen King novel. Sony Pictures released \u201cThe Running Man,\u201d starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, in 1987.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201c\u2019Now You See Me: Now You Don\u2019t\u2019 and \u2018The Running Man\u2019 opening on the same weekend was perfect timing, because they\u2019ll play into Thanksgiving,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore. \u201cCertainly, this was a great warm-up for what\u2019s going to be a much-needed boost for the box office.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Box office analyst David A. Gross, who runs the FranchiseRe movie consulting firm, wrote that \u201cThe Running Man\u2019s\u201d opening was above average for a King movie. According to FranchiseRe data, the last 18 King adaptations opened to $14.6 million on average domestically.\n <\/p>\n

\n Third overall at the box office was Disney\u2019s \u201cPredator: Badlands,\u201d which had its best franchise opening with $40 million domestically last weekend. But it earned just $13 million this weekend, a worse-than-expected drop of 68% from its opening.\n <\/p>\n

\n The slate of movies in theaters this weekend is ultimately the \u201ccalm before the storm,\u201d said Robbins, when Universal Pictures debuts \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d the sequel to last year\u2019s highly acclaimed \u201cWicked,\u201d which opened<\/a> to $114 million.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d could rake in upwards of $140 million to as much as $180 million, according to Gross. That\u2019s more than the combined success of \u201cWicked\u201d and \u201cGladiator II\u201d during the same pre-Thanksgiving weekend last year, which combined to gross $169.5 million.\n <\/p>\n

\n Hollywood has seen sluggish box office sales this fall, but industry analysts expect a rebound in the coming weeks.\n <\/p>\n

\n Disney\u2019s \u201cZootopia 2\u201d opens Thanksgiving weekend, which could end a \u201clong drought\u201d of animated movies that didn\u2019t perform well at the box office, Robbins said.\n <\/p>\n

\n And Universal Pictures is releasing \u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2,\u201d a sequel to the 2023 horror film based on the video game series.\n <\/p>\n

\n Other movies expected to see big audiences include \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ice\u201d (December 19), and \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d \u201cAnaconda\u201d and \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d on December 25.\n <\/p>\n
