{"id":297570,"date":"2025-11-17T18:52:06","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T18:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/297570\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T18:52:06","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T18:52:06","slug":"can-glp-1s-help-with-alcohol-drug-addiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/297570\/","title":{"rendered":"Can GLP-1s help with alcohol, drug addiction?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 GLP-1 medications have grown popular in recent years for weight loss, but one doctor has found another use: combating alcohol and drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Steven Klein, a physician specializing in addiction, is spearheading a new type of treatment program for more than 130 patients in Pennsylvania and South Florida who struggle with alcohol or drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Klein is helping patients curb their alcohol or drug cravings using injections of the brand-name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/glp-1s-linked-lower-colon-cancer-mortality-rates-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GLP-1 medication<\/a> Mounjaro.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/glp-1-drugs-ozempic-surprising-positive-doctor\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tGLP-1 drugs like Ozempic have \u2018surprising\u2019 positive effects: Doctor\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a growing body of evidence in pre-clinical models using animals and human data as well that shows that cravings and use of alcohol and opioids decrease when these medications are being used,\u201d Klein told NewsNation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/morninginamerica\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/morninginamerica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cMorning in America.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Klein called his personal use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/glp-1-drugs-ozempic-surprising-positive-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the medication \u201ctransformative,<\/a>\u201d as someone who previously struggled with food, alcohol and drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat these medications do, they go into that reward system, and they make people feel OK without these substances, whether that substance be a cheeseburger, a beer, a line of cocaine,\u201d Klein said. \u201cAny of these usbtances make our reward system light up. These medications are going to the root of the reward system and taking away patients\u2019 cravings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump announced efforts last week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/health-headlines\/ap-trump-unveils-deal-to-expand-coverage-and-lower-costs-on-obesity-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lower the cost<\/a> of such weight loss medication.
