Wallace says instead of being paralyzed by pressure, they leaned into what worked the first time and then went deeper with the show\u2019s second season, which premiered on Sunday. Whatever your hopes are, you can never predict that kind of resonance. When you returned to make season two, what was the pressure like for you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI don\u2019t think there was pressure to out-do season one. It was more like, \u201cLet\u2019s just keep telling a good story.\u201d We got to know these characters in season one, and now we get to spend more time with them in season two. We get to raise the stakes. They are so fun to be around. I feel like we barely skimmed the surface. This world is so rich \u2014 West Texas, oil and gas, Fort Worth, the upstairs downstairs of this whole thing. It\u2019s such fertile soil for storytelling. And even after season two, again, I feel like we\u2019re still just skimming the surface. Our cast has added so much depth to the characters. They know them so well now that they make it easy to tell an entertaining story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYour star Billy Bob Thornton recently said he\u2019s signed on to Landman for four or five years. How many seasons is Landman? Is it five\u2026 could it be 10? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWell, there are a lot of forces well beyond my control and pay grade that determine all that. But, I think it\u2019s as long as Taylor [Sheridan, co-creator and showrunner] wants. It\u2019s well, well, beyond my pay grade, but as long as everyone\u2019s still having fun and the story is continuing in a worthwhile way, then, sure, I\u2019d love for it to go as long as the story permits. There\u2019s a lot of runway left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBig Taylor Sheridan news came out ahead of Landman\u2018s return about his new NBCUniversal deal [Sheridan will be <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/taylor-sheridan-leave-paramount-for-nbcuniversal-film-tv-1236410489\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/taylor-sheridan-leave-paramount-for-nbcuniversal-film-tv-1236410489\/\">leaving\u00a0Paramount\u00a0for NBCUniversal<\/a>, with a film deal to begin next year and TV deal starting in 2028]. How did you react when you saw the news, and do you know if it will <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/landman-billy-bob-thornton-sam-elliott-on-sheridan-paramount-exit-1236424559\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/landman-billy-bob-thornton-sam-elliott-on-sheridan-paramount-exit-1236424559\/\">impact future Landman seasons<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI don\u2019t think it\u2019s affecting anything in the immediate. Right now, we\u2019re just going to keep doing what we\u2019ve been doing. The thing is, I trust Taylor, and he cares deeply about his stories and the characters he\u2019s written. We all put ourselves in his hands in this process. He\u2019s the showrunner, he\u2019s a writer. He\u2019s the reason why we\u2019re all here. So I\u2019m just going to trust the process in all this, you know?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSheridan is working on so many shows, and some of them have had changes behind the scenes. Landman hasn\u2019t. What\u2019s your secret to working with one of the busiest creatives in show business and Landman\u2018s consistent set?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI can safely say I\u2019ve never been around a busier person. But I mean, he\u2019s Taylor. He\u2019s one of one. I just saw him last week. He was acting in [another Paramount+ show from Sheridan] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/lioness\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lioness_1\" data-tag=\"lioness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lioness<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/lioness-taylor-sheridan-acting-role-season-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/lioness-taylor-sheridan-acting-role-season-2\/\">he\u2019s in character<\/a> with a huge gun, bulletproof vest and tactical gear. He\u2019s doing his thing. Then he gets off set and goes to a gala for Sam Elliot, who is winning an award in Texas. He\u2019s just a constant force of motion. Landman is like one planet in his galaxy, but it\u2019s a fun one to be on, and it\u2019s the one I know. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s a unique moment in media for a showrunner like Taylor to have this universe of shows, and it\u2019s so diverse. I mean, to have Lioness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/tulsa-king\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tulsa-king_1\" data-tag=\"tulsa-king\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tulsa King<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/yellowstone\/\" id=\"auto-tag_yellowstone_1\" data-tag=\"yellowstone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yellowstone<\/a>, Landman? What a legacy right there. Your quote last season about plans to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/landman-season-2-demi-moore-return-1236179389\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/landman-season-2-demi-moore-return-1236179389\/\">elevate<\/a> her character in season two went viral, because viewers wanted to see more from her in the show. How will Cami be cleaning up the mess left for her after her<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/jon-hamm-landman-finale-fate-season-2-1236108892\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/jon-hamm-landman-finale-fate-season-2-1236108892\/\"> oil tycoon husband Monty\u2019s (Jon Hamm) death<\/a>, and how do you use her more in season two?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the first episode, at first, you\u2019re like, \u201cHow is she gonna handle this?\u201d Then she gives that speech [at her oil company MTex\u2019s business luncheon] and you\u2019re like, \u201cAll right, she\u2019s got some real fire in her.\u201d But it\u2019s gonna be tricky. She is now swimming with the sharks \u2014 they\u2019re vicious, and they\u2019re coming after her. Because Monty wasn\u2019t the nicest guy. You can\u2019t if you are the biggest independent oil producer in West Texas. She\u2019s been adjacent to this world for so long. Her and Monty were a really good couple, but she wasn\u2019t the one having to make these decisions. Now she\u2019s trying to find both her own authority while also trying to trust Tommy [Thornton] to help her navigate that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat\u2019s one of the most interesting parts of her conflict \u2014 trying to determine when to trust someone [Tommy] who maybe knows more, and when to trust her own instincts and follow them. Watching her navigate that is one of the most interesting parts of Cami\u2019s character this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAli Larter and Michelle Randolph\u2019s characters, Angela and Ainsley, are<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/michelle-randolph-landman-response-1923-season-2-1236092387\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/michelle-randolph-landman-response-1923-season-2-1236092387\/\"> fan favorites who initially sparked debates<\/a> and vocal opinions. How much fun was it to lean into what works with Angela and Ainsley?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYes to steering into all of that. I\u2019ve been approached by so many people who say, \u201cI know an Angela,\u201d or \u201cI know an Ainsley.\u201d Big Texas women, big Texas personalities \u2014 big hair, big everything. The show can veer so far into the danger and drama of the oil field, and then in the next scene, you have Angela and Ainsley like two balls of sunshine bopping around the old folks\u2019 home. That levity mixed with the gravitas of some of the drama is such a unique thing about this show. I think it took people a little while to understand that, but once the audience got on board, I think they were like, \u201cI like how dynamic this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSo it was about being able to know that worked in season one, and then plow straight ahead into all of those things we loved and go deeper further, funnier, in some aspects. Michelle and Ali just really, really own those characters \u2014 when they set foot on set for this season, it was like: They\u2019re back. They took off. Was Sam always someone you talked about bringing in, and what will we learn from meeting Tommy\u2019s family this season?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI know Taylor has so much respect for Sam. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/sam-elliot-interview-yellowstone-prequel-series-1883-1235058739\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/sam-elliot-interview-yellowstone-prequel-series-1883-1235058739\/\">What Sam Elliott did on 1883<\/a> is an all-time great performance. Taylor loves working with actors he loves and respects. He uses them over and over again; it\u2019s a really cool thing to have this ensemble that he uses. Taylor is, among many other things he\u2019s good at, so good at casting. So of course it made sense for Sam to step into this role and into this world. Any time you get actors at the caliber of Billy and Sam playing off of each other, not to be clich\u00e9, but that\u2019s when magic happens. There are scenes between the two of them this season where we\u2019d all be at the monitors tearing up like, \u201cAre you seeing this?\u201d Even after the fourth or fifth take.\u00a0I\u2019m just so honored Sam is a part of this show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChange is upon the characters in season two with financial elevation and more power, and that causes early drama with Tommy and Angela, and also with their son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) and his girlfriend Ariana (Paulina Ch\u00e1vez). We hear news updates on the radio about the state of the oil market. What political line did you draw by setting this under the current administration, but not mentioning Trump? How do you make the show timely without hitting viewers over the head with politics?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s interesting. I don\u2019t think a show like this has ever exited, definitely not one about oil and gas, like this. In Dallas, you see the upstairs side of things. The business suits and the C-suites. But this is a look at the more dynamic version, like the roughnecks out in the patch and the offices in Dallas and Fort Worth. It\u2019s grounded in that reality. The current, contemporary reality of the oil and gas market. But we don\u2019t want to be beholden to what the price of oil is on any given Wednesday. We\u2019re alongside that reality while not trying to be a part of it. So while it informs everything we do in the story, we\u2019re not beholden to who\u2019s in office or what the market is doing at that time. Do you imagine you would turn around a third season at the same pace?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI think it\u2019s the plan. We hate to make people wait too long, and we\u2019re all excited to get back and do it again. After we wrap, a couple weeks later, we\u2019re like, \u201cDang, I miss everybody\u201d \u2014 cast and crew. We have such a great crew. I think we\u2019re ready to get back to it as soon as we can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAre you feeling good about season three renewal at this moment?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOf course I am. I\u2019m really looking forward to it. To clarify, there\u2019s no official green light yet for season three.
