Discover why they should be avoided and which healthy practices you should turn to instead.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9fe860\" class=\"body-graf\">Maybe you saw it tucked away in the corner of your gym, or perhaps it caught your eye when an impressively toned influencer used it on social media.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c089f9\" class=\"body-graf\">The allure of this particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/shop\/low-impact-exercise-equipment-t277106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">piece of fitness equipment<\/a> isn&#8217;t new \u2014 but it also hasn&#8217;t gone away. In an age when people are rightly focused on building core strength, a tool that claims to work multiple muscles at once is certainly tempting.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7f2eb3\" class=\"body-graf\">But certified personal trainer and TODAY fitness contributor Stephanie Mansour is staying far away from this one, she says.<\/p>\n<p>Never Have I Ever: Used an Ab Wheel<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-11d066\" class=\"body-graf\">An ab wheel, sometimes called an ab roller, is a small, relatively inexpensive and deceptively simple piece of fitness equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a7c39d\" class=\"body-graf\">To use one, you&#8217;ll hold on to either side of a wheel, get into a plank position, and hold that position while you roll the wheel back and forth in front of you. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c6e229\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a positive in that it is meant to help you engage all of your ab muscles,&#8221; Mansour tells TODAY.com, including the rectus abdominus, internal and external obliques, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/deep-core-exercises-rcna155580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">deeper transverse abdominus muscles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-62d6bb\" class=\"body-graf\">If that sounds challenging, it is, Mansour says. And that&#8217;s why she&#8217;ll never use one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-95abdc\" class=\"body-graf\">An ab wheel might be an appropriate challenge for someone who already has a &#8220;super, super strong core,&#8221; Mansour says, on top of expert balance and muscle control. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7fd4a4\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;If you\u2019re an experienced exerciser, you could probably do this the right way,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;But for someone just starting out, or even someone like me who is experienced, this isn\u2019t my first choice for how to work my abs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-61c62e\" class=\"body-graf\">The problem is that many people who try to use ab wheels aren\u2019t advanced enough in their fitness journey to use them correctly. And, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/fitness-trends-waste-time-money-rcna24972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mansour found out firsthand<\/a>, using them incorrectly can put you at risk for injury.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-97424c\" class=\"body-graf\">Over a decade ago, Manosur tried using an ab wheel. &#8220;And I threw my back out trying to use this thing,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-933274\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;You can easily do it incorrectly because you\u2019re only using your hands to hold on to a very small surface area,&#8221; Mansour explains. &#8220;It&#8217;s very easy to go too far, to go too fast and to be kind of jerky with it,&#8221; she says. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5f9229\" class=\"body-graf\">If you don&#8217;t have the strength, control and balance to keep yourself up, you could find yourself in a tricky situation with your arms outstretched and no way to pull them back. &#8220;There&#8217;s really no checks and balances,&#8221; she adds.<\/p>\n<p>What to Do Instead<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-76d088\" class=\"body-graf\">For people who are interested in using an ab wheel but aren&#8217;t advanced enough, Mansour recommends working on other core exercises first \u2014\u00a0including those that engage multiple muscles at once, like the roller.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7cf62d\" class=\"body-graf\">Start by working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/balance-exercises-walking-challenge-rcna135895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">core exercises that challenge<\/a> you to hold yourself up with fewer points of contact on the ground, like holding a plank with one arm or one leg outstretched, Mansour suggests.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-427597\" class=\"body-graf\">You could also work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/3-workouts-will-help-burn-calories-get-stronger-rcna49681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shoulder taps<\/a> in a high plank position, which similarly &#8220;mimic what you&#8217;ll be doing with the ab roller,&#8221; she says. Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/how-do-side-plank-target-your-obliques-tone-your-core-t218374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">alternating side planks as well<\/a>, which challenge your balance and engage the obliques. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4cf237\" class=\"body-graf\">Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/exercises-with-sliders-rcna231346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">using sliders under your hands<\/a> or feet to add some additional balance work to your core moves. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0e0f9c\" class=\"body-graf\">If you are really intent on using an ab roller, Mansour suggests starting by just rolling it out and back an inch at a time to get used to the movements and to gauge your strength.
