He may not love it, but Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet is proud when people scream \u201cLisan al-Gaib!\u201d<\/a> to him on the streets. It\u2019s a reference to Dune: Part Two<\/a>, where Chalamet\u2019s character, Paul Atreides, rises to power and fulfills his destiny as the godlike figure<\/a> in the life of the Fremen. After the film\u2019s release, calling Chalamet \u201cLisan al-Gaib!\u201d basically became a meme, but that wouldn\u2019t have happened if one crucial scene hadn\u2019t come together perfectly.<\/p>\n

Just four days removed from completing principal photography on next year\u2019s Dune: Part Three<\/a>, Chalamet joined fellow actor Adam Sandler in Los Angeles to discuss their careers, and io9 was in attendance, courtesy of Netflix. The duo watched clips from each other\u2019s careers, including Paul\u2019s unforgettable speech from the end of Dune: Part Two. Here it is as a reminder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a hell of a thing to memorize,\u201d Chalamet began. \u201cYou\u2019re memorizing something in a made-up language, so I\u2019m always very proud of that. And Denis [Villeneuve, director] had me memorize it in English too. So there are verses to that that are normal spoken word, but that sequence I\u2019m so proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI basically wrapped filming Part Three four days ago,\u201d Chalamet continued. \u201cIt\u2019s moving to me that something as out there as Dune, I\u2019m talking about the themes, even, in the book, and what a psychedelic story it is, has taken this personal resonance on for me. I\u2019m even tearing up a bit watching that because I\u2019ve just finished four days ago. I\u2019ve grown up through those movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coming off two smaller films in A Complete Unknown and this year\u2019s Marty Supreme, Chalamet then contrasted that work with work on the mega franchise. \u201cDune, by nature of how huge the production is, you can have two days or three days where there\u2019s not much demanded of you, so I always circled that scene,\u201d the actor said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Okay, this is my shot,\u2019 and I wanted to prove to Denis and myself, besides doing a speech in a made-up language in front of 800 people or whatever, that I can own it. And I\u2019m so proud of that. I remember even calling a good friend of mine the night we shot that and saying \u2018Man, that went fucking awesome.\u2019 So that was awesome. Words don\u2019t do it justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also, it was satisfying, because the first film didn\u2019t have, for Paul Atreides, that climactic moment,\u201d Chalamet continued. \u201cSo it felt like I was building to that for years. And now, you know, I\u2019m on the streets, and people go, \u201cLisan al-Gaib!\u201d which is more humiliating than it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chalamet\u2019s new film, Marty Supreme, is out on Christmas Day. Then, next Christmas, Paul\u2019s journey comes to a close in Dune: Part Three, which is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.<\/p>\n
