\n\tMetallica<\/a> have paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>, whom they credit for giving them their big break. The musician died on Tuesday<\/a> morning at the age of 76.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant to Metallica.\u00a0Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend are a few that come to mind,\u201d the band wrote in a statement on Instagram. \u201cOzzy and Sharon believed in us and transformed our lives and careers.\u00a0 He taught us how to play in the big leagues while at the same time being warm, welcoming, engaging, and all around brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs drummer Lars Ulrich<\/a> told Howard Stern in a 2023 interview<\/a>, Osbourne \u201cwas known to bring out bands that were kind of on the verge of breaking\u201d to tour with him. In 1986, Metallica had released Master of Puppets, and Ulrich said Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne \u201cwere kind enough to take us out and give us a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe said that five years prior, he and singer James Hetfield<\/a> were still trying to \u201cfigure out what we were doing,\u201d and then with the Osbourne\u2019s invitation to tour, \u201cwe were out playing arenas in America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was such a transformative time,\u201d Ulrich told Stern. \u201cAnd it was our first go around in the big leagues, and hanging with Ozzy and being around that A-level energy and that sort of A-league, like we were in the we were in the majors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn that tour, during soundchecks they would play Black Sabbath<\/a> songs, something the band heard Osbourne thought was them \u201ctaunting him,\u201d but it was really because \u201cwe wanted him to come up and sing with us. That was like our big dream,\u201d Ulrich said.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, that dream did come true. They performed together during 2009\u2019s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame event, where they delivered \u201cIron Man\u201d and \u201cParanoid\u201d together. More recently, Metallica performed during Osbourne and Black Sabbath\u2019s Back to the Beginning farewell show in their hometown of Birmingham, England on July 5. The band covered<\/a> Black Sabbath\u2019s \u201cHole in the Sky\u201d from 1975\u2019s\u00a0Sabotage\u00a0and they also covered \u201cJohnny Blade\u201d from 1978\u2019s\u00a0Never Say Die!<\/p>\n
