{"id":302638,"date":"2025-11-20T06:02:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T06:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/302638\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T06:02:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T06:02:12","slug":"san-francisco-decides-to-dismantle-iconic-vaillancourt-fountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/302638\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco decides to dismantle &#8220;iconic&#8221; Vaillancourt Fountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The San Francisco Arts Commission has voted to dismantle and store a 1970s concrete fountain in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/san-francisco\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco<\/a> designed by artist Armand Vaillancourt.<\/p>\n<p>The city of San Francisco&#8217;s arts agency made the decision to remove the Vaillancourt Fountain following reports that it posed a &#8220;an immediate and serious hazard&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Made of twisting, cubic bands of reinforced concrete, the Vaillancourt Fountain is located in a wedge-shaped public plaza designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lawrence-halprin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Halprin<\/a>, which is set to be redeveloped.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270719 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vaillancourt-fountain-san-franscisco-preservation-_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x571.jpg\" alt=\"Vaillancourt Fountain\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1583\"  \/>The Vaillancourt Fountain is set to be dismantled. The top photo is by Florian Sholz.<\/p>\n<p>Conservation groups\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tclf.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Cultural Landscape Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docomomo-us.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Docomomo US<\/a>\u00a0became aware of the threat to Vaillancourt Fountain last month, when the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department issued a &#8220;surprise announcement&#8221; that the fountain had been determined a safety hazard.<\/p>\n<p>Following a flurry of online activity between the organisation, the fountain&#8217;s caretaking organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfartscommission.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Arts Commission<\/a>, voted eight to five in a meeting earlier this month to dismantle and store the fountain.<\/p>\n<p>The commission plans to store the fountain for up to three years and it remains unclear what will happen to the structure afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was gut-wrenching yesterday to watch the San Francisco Arts Commission vote 8-5 in favor of dismantling and removing the Vaillancourt Fountain based on an artificially created sense of public threat,&#8221; said Docomomo US executive director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/author\/liz-waytkus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Watkus<\/a> in a statement following the vote.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270720 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vaillancourt-fountain-san-franscisco-preservation-_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Vaillancourt Fountain\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>According to a local arts organisation, the fountain proved a safety risk. Birnbaum.<\/p>\n<p>According to advocacy organisation The Cultural Landscape Foundation, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department made its decision that &#8220;the fountain poses an immediate and serious hazard&#8221; based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tclf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-10\/10.27.25%20Vaillancourt%20Fountain.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on letter from the Department of Building Inspection<\/a>\u00a0and report from the DCI Engineers in May.<\/p>\n<p>The documents state the fountain displays &#8220;corrosion and degradation&#8221; and should be vacated until &#8220;the hazardous conditions are abated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, it did not state the fountain was immediately dangerous, which was part of the contention towards taking the project down, along with the fountain&#8217;s historical and cultural relevance.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/16\/eames-house-studio-reopens-los-angeles-fire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/eames-house-studio-los-angeles-reopening_dezeen_2364_sq-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Eames House and Studio\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Eames House and studio reopens following Los Angeles fires\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the plaza will be converted into a park under developer BXP, although The Cultural Landscape Foundation chief executive Birnbaum noted he&#8217;s only seen a &#8220;schematic diagram&#8221; of a large lawn<\/p>\n<p>Birnbaum argues that the fountain could be retained as part of any redevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think the important thing here is it&#8217;s not an either-or,&#8221; Birnbaum told Dezeen. &#8220;It&#8217;s possible to revisit the design of this plaza and its work of art without destroying it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vaillancourt-fountain-san-franscisco-preservation-_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Vaillancourt Fountain\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>As of now, it will be replaced with a park.
