Listen to the Uncanny Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/star-wars-science-droid-dreams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:R2-D2;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">R2-D2<\/a> beeped and booped\u2014and now birds that copy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/blog\/life-unbounded\/do-we-live-in-a-star-wars-universe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Star Wars;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Star Wars<\/a> character are giving scientists fresh insight into how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/captive-beluga-whale-imitated-human-voices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:different species imitate complex sounds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">different species imitate complex sounds<\/a>. A study, published recently in Scientific Reports, analyzed the sounds of nine species of parrots, including Budgies, as well as European Starlings to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-23444-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:how accurately each bird mimicked R2-D2\u2019s robotic whirring;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">how accurately each bird mimicked R2-D2\u2019s robotic whirring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers did acoustic analyses on samples of birds imitating the plucky droid that were already available online to compare how statistically similar each bird\u2019s noises were to a model of R2-D2\u2019s sounds. The starlings, a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/what-birds-really-listen-for-in-birdsong-its-not-what-you-think\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:songbird;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">songbird<\/a>, emerged as star vocalists: their ability to produce \u201cmultiphonic\u201d noises\u2014in their case, two different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/podcast\/episode\/musical-note-perception-can-depend-on-culture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:notes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">notes<\/a> or tones expressed simultaneously\u2014allowed them to replicate R2-D2\u2019s complex chirps more accurately. Parrots and budgies, which only produce \u201cmonophonic\u201d (or single-tone) noises, imitated the droid\u2019s sounds with less accuracy and musicality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The differing abilities stem from physical variations in the birds\u2019 \u201csyrinx\u201d\u2014a unique vocal organ that sits at the base of the avian windpipe. \u201cStarlings can produce two sounds at once because they control both sides of the syrinx independently,\u201d says study co-author Nick Dam, an evolutionary biologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands. \u201cParrots are physically incapable of producing two tones simultaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/newsletters\/?utm_source=yahoo_news&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=feed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:[Sign up for Today in Science, a free daily newsletter];elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">[Sign up for Today in Science, a free daily newsletter]<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It isn\u2019t exactly known why different species developed differing control over their syrinx. \u201cLikely, some ancestor of songbirds happened to evolve the ability to control the muscles on both sides of the syrinx, and this helped them in some way,\u201d says University of Northern Colorado biologist Lauryn Benedict, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study but sometimes works with its authors. One of the leading explanations involves mating; the better at singing a male songbird is, the more females he attracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Though the study is \u201ca really elegant way of approaching this question of whether the starlings versus the parrots are capable of producing the same sound with the same accuracy,\u201d it doesn\u2019t fully address how much training or rewards the birds received, says Nicole Creanza, an evolutionary biologist at Vanderbilt University, who also wasn\u2019t involved with the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Benedict agrees that the researchers could work with the public to do more tightly controlled trials.
