{"id":304815,"date":"2025-11-21T08:29:25","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T08:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/304815\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T08:29:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T08:29:25","slug":"midtown-parking-garage-explosion-leaves-1-person-in-serious-condition-fdny-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/304815\/","title":{"rendered":"Midtown parking garage explosion leaves 1 person in serious condition, FDNY officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) &#8212; Two people were injured, including one seriously, after an explosion in a parking garage in Midtown Manhattan sent a heavy vent cover flying into pedestrians, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The FDNY says the explosion happened just after 9 p.m. at 160 E. 53rd St. between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Officials received reports of an explosion in a parking garage, due to a possible generator malfunction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">When units responded to the scene, they found two civilians injured across the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">FDNY Deputy Chief Joseph Abbamonte said there was &#8220;some kind of back draft or back puff of a generator&#8221; which he says caused the heavy steel vent cover to become a projectile, propelling across 53rd Street and striking two pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA hsDdd DbOXS oklLN GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"hsDdd NDJZt sJeUN IJwXl vBqtr KrDt itslR WAUrb hakZw HlUVI \" data-testid=\"prism-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/18183252_112025-wabc-vent-cover-img.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A witness told Eyewitness News it happened so suddenly, people didn&#8217;t have a chance to get out of the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Both of the victims were taken to the hospital. One woman is recovering from minor injuries, while the other victim is in serious but stable condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">FDNY officials believe the explosion was accidental, saying that a back pull on the generator ignited the soot in the chimney or vent pipe, causing it to explode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">They said the emergency diesel generator is in the basement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The situation was placed under control around 9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Fire Marshals are investigating what caused this.
