Think of them as tiny helpers in plant foods that support overall health,\u201d Bannan tells TODAY.com.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-817a33\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cFlavanols support blood vessel health, which can help with healthy circulation and blood pressure. They also play a role in reducing inflammation and supporting overall heart health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-85b46e\" class=\"body-graf\">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-76160-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> also suggests flavanols may support memory and cognitive function as people age, she adds, perhaps because they <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2518374\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">boost blood flow to the brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fc09ab\" class=\"body-graf\">Also known as flavan-3-ols, flavanols are one of the most abundant polyphenols \u2014 beneficial plant compounds \u2014 in the human diet, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11313926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">researchers note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-41f748\" class=\"body-graf\">Cocoa is particularly rich in certain flavanols, which is why many clinical studies use cocoa extracts, Bannan notes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-23cd85\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen people think of flavanols, chocolate is usually the first thing that comes to mind,\u201d Bannan says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-96de93\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe challenge is that many chocolate products are highly processed or contain added sugar, which lowers the flavanol content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c01853\" class=\"body-graf\">Fruits are a great way to get these compounds \u2014 along with fiber and other nutrients \u2014 but they contain generally modest amounts compared to concentrated sources like tea, minimally processed cocoa or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/is-dark-chocolate-good-for-you-rcna104385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dark chocolate<\/a>, she notes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f68f55\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSo getting flavanols from both fruit and cocoa can be beneficial,\u201d says Bannan, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Burnout-Balance-Healing-Strategies-Immunity\/dp\/0593232429\/?tag=nb013-book-20&amp;asc_campaign=&amp;asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.today.com%2Fhealth%2Fdiet-fitness%2Ffruits-with-high-fat-rcna242539&amp;asc_source=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cFrom Burnout to Balance.\u201d<\/a> \u201cThe key is enjoying a variety of fruits as part of your daily routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6cfdcf\" class=\"body-graf\">The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2161831323000637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recommends<\/a> consuming 400 to 600 milligrams of flavanols per day &#8220;to improve cardiometabolic health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d32eab\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is a food-based guideline and not a recommendation for flavan-3-ol supplements,\u201d the authors emphasized.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d84027\" class=\"body-graf\">To put that in perspective, a cup of green tea contains about 320 milligrams of flavanols, a cup of raw blackberries has about 65 milligrams, while three squares of dark chocolate made with 70 to 85% cacao contain 20 milligrams of flavanols.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cec60b\" class=\"body-graf\">Here are nine fruits that contain the most flavanols:<\/p>\n<p>Blackberries1 cup of blackberries, 65 milligrams of flavanols<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1871e8\" class=\"body-graf\">Dietitians consider blackberries one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/dietitian-tip-blackberries-inflammation-rcna219627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">best fruits to fight inflammation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-841488\" class=\"body-graf\">Besides flavanols, the deeply dark fruit is also high in vitamin C and fiber. Blackberries are tasty on their own, as a topping for yogurt, salad or oatmeal or an ingredient in your favorite smoothie.<\/p>\n<p>Plums2 plums, up to 79 milligrams of flavanols<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e076c2\" class=\"body-graf\">There are more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/plum-benefits-rcna171475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2,000 varieties of plums<\/a>. Flavanol levels can vary quite a bit depending on the fruit variety and how ripe it is, Bannan says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7d2c88\" class=\"body-graf\">Plums, fresh or dried, are famous for gut health and make a sweet, satisfying snack.<\/p>\n<p>Cherries1 cup of cherries, up to 34 milligrams of flavanols<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7f70b6\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;I always add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/health\/are-cherries-good-for-you-rcna156645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cherries<\/a> to my smoothies to add natural sweetness and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/dietitian-tip-anti-inflammatory-fruit-c-rcna208768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fight inflammation<\/a>,&#8221; says registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo, nutrition editor for TODAY. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f535e4\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;They are especially nice in a post-workout smoothie to ease inflammation in the joints.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peach1 peach, up to 26 milligrams of flavanols<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1b44a6\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/peach-benefits-rcna169935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peaches<\/a> can be a sweet way to get a fiber boost. This makes them &#8220;the highest whole-food source of fiber,\u201d Theresa Gentile, registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/raspberry-benefits-rcna156312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously told TODAY.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6aa4e2\" class=\"body-graf\">Sweet and aromatic, raspberries can be eaten fresh on their own or used to top oatmeal or yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Grapes1 cup of grapes, 6 milligrams of flavanols<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-139f37\" class=\"body-graf\">Red, black and green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/many-calories-are-grape-rcna58319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">grapes<\/a> are identical in terms of nutrition, but they have slightly different antioxidants, Rizzo said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-30f45d\" class=\"body-graf\">Green grapes are the ones with the most flavanols, while purple and red grapes provide anthocyanins.
