It\u2019s typically measured in beats per minute (bpm). A healthy range for most adults is between 60 and 100 bpm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[1]<\/p>\n<p> Usually, a resting heart rate on the lower end is a sign of better physical fitness, although some well-trained athletes may even have resting heart rates in the 40s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[2]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stronger [the heart] is, the lower the heart rate needs to be in order to achieve the same amount of blood flow,\u201d explains\u00a0<a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucihealth.org\/clinicians\/brian-becerra-1497287619\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Becerra, MD<\/a>, a board-certified cardiologist at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, California.<\/p>\n<p>Your fitness level isn\u2019t the only thing that influences your resting heart rate. Your age, size, <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/stop-smoking-pictures\/the-best-and-worst-ways-to-quit-smoking.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smoking<\/a>, medication use, and other health conditions like <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-disease\/guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a> or high cholesterol also factor in. Things like the air temperature, your body position, and emotions like stress or <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/anxiety\/guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anxiety<\/a> can have a temporary impact, too. Your heart will beat a little slower when you\u2019re calm and lying down than when you\u2019re on edge and standing up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[3]<\/p>\n<p>Heart rates that are too high or low may be a sign of an underlying problem like heart disease, <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/copd\/guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lung disease<\/a>, anemia, or an over- or underactive <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/thyroid\/guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thyroid<\/a>, says <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unchealth.org\/care-services\/doctors\/k\/christopher-kelly-ms-md-rpvi-cbcct\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Kelly, MD<\/a>, a cardiologist with UNC Health in Raleigh, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>To get a sense of what\u2019s normal for you, check your resting heart rate a few times a week, with a <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/ess-products\/best-heart-rate-monitors\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">heart rate monitor<\/a>, smartwatch, or a fitness tracker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[4]<\/p>\n<p> If you don\u2019t use wearable technology, you can perform a manual heart rate check.
