{"id":306100,"date":"2025-11-21T23:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T23:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/306100\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T23:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T23:59:09","slug":"detroit-tigers-cut-ties-with-veteran-utility-man-at-non-tender-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/306100\/","title":{"rendered":"Detroit Tigers cut ties with veteran utility man at non-tender deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AY6EQ6XAIRA25G4WGPOGPVJDLA\">DETROIT &#8212; The Detroit Tigers non-tendered veteran infielder Andy Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez on Friday night, parting ways with the popular utility man whose standout moment came with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/03\/detroit-tigers-playoff-hero-ready-to-prove-his-value-again-in-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/03\/detroit-tigers-playoff-hero-ready-to-prove-his-value-again-in-2025.html\">crucial playoff hit in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZXVTPTM4ZVCF3B4Y7DJ6X2HZHU\">The Tigers reached agreements with three arbitration-eligible players: Catcher Jake Rogers ($3.05 million); outfielder Matt Vierling ($3.26 million); and right-handed reliever Beau Brieske ($1.16 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J2NY25QMRBEBDB7U54Y6HD6OWQ\">Although they have not yet agreed to new deals, the Tigers tendered 2026 contracts to eight other arbitration-eligible players: left-handed pitchers Tarik Skubal and Tyler Holton; right-handed pitchers Casey Mize and Will Vest; infielder Zach McKinstry; outfielders Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter; and first baseman Spencer Torkelson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W5VOCNAFLBFBPMRDG3O2LNMFCE\">Every other player on the 40-man roster was also extended a 2026 contract, although those who haven\u2019t reached arbitration status generally accept a salary at roughly the league minimum of $780,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SFS63D72FNAJ3GKFLKC26VWVXY\">The Tigers have until Jan. 9, 2026, to exchange arbitration figures with their eight remaining eligible players. If they cannot reach agreements, the salaries will be determined at arbitration hearings in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LFXS6RAIRRHDROACZTWSL4V3PA\">The Tigers also non-tendered six pitchers who had already been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/11\/tigers-add-5-prospects-designate-6-pitchers-in-roster-shakeup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/11\/tigers-add-5-prospects-designate-6-pitchers-in-roster-shakeup.html\">designated for assignment and removed from the roster earlier this week<\/a>: Right-handers Jason Foley, Dugan Darnell, Jack Little, Tyler Mattison and Tanner Rainey, and left-hander Sean Guenther.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VD72ZFJCNFB7DMSHYY6BGRGFCI\">In baseball, a player under team control who is not offered a contract for the coming year is said to be \u201cnon-tendered.\u201d The player is removed from the 40-man roster and becomes a free agent eligible to sign with any team, including his former club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J65JQPXMGZH57B5YQ6PNTALZ6U\">By non-tendering players who had already been DFA\u2019d, the Tigers essentially preempted the waiver process and granted the players free agency. The Tigers now have a chance to make their pitch to those they\u2019d like to retain on minor-league deals. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TJMEPK2Y4JETHFH4TG2U6UXCBQ\">Friday night was the leaguewide deadline for tendering 2026 contracts to players. Among the notable players who were non-tendered were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2025\/11\/rangers-non-tender-adolis-garcia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2025\/11\/rangers-non-tender-adolis-garcia.html\">Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia and catcher Jonah Heim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O4Q3A65445AALPLZQ6CEVUYWAM\">Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, 32, came to the Tigers on a waiver claim from the Rangers before the 2023 season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C4Q7FF445VHQZGOSANZPB4B4RQ\">He\u2019s spent most of the last three years as the club\u2019s primary right-handed platoon bat. Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez is known for plus defense at second and third base and a knack for battering left-handed pitching. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4CJR6T34K5HWFCA64F7HWEWNUQ\">But while his defense was excellent in 2025, his bat cooled off considerably. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/06\/tigers-option-veteran-utility-infielder-to-toledo-amid-prolonged-slump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/tigers\/2025\/06\/tigers-option-veteran-utility-infielder-to-toledo-amid-prolonged-slump.html\">sent to Toledo amid a prolonged offensive slump on June 6<\/a>.
