\n \u201cEvery five weeks,\u201d Jimmy Kimmel observed, President Trump \u201cflips out and wants me fired.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n It happened again this week, when the president posted on Truth Social, asking why ABC keeps \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d on the air.\n <\/p>\n

\n Kimmel responded on Thursday night\u2019s show, pointing out that Trump\u2019s post came at 12:49 a.m., \u201c11 minutes after the show ended on the East Coast.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n He said directly to Trump, \u201cThanks for watching us on TV instead of on YouTube. We appreciate that. And I\u2019ll tell you, it\u2019s viewers like you who keep us on the air, ironically.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Kimmel, whose contract with ABC is coming due in May, then said, \u201cMr. President, I admire your tenacity. If you\u2019re watching tonight, which I presume you are, how about this: I\u2019ll go when you go, OK? We\u2019ll be a team. Let\u2019s ride off into the sunset together like Butch Cassidy and the Suntan Kid. And until then, if I may borrow a phrase from you: \u2018Quiet, piggy.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump\u2019s \u201cpiggy\u201d remark to a Bloomberg reporter last week garnered widespread outrage this week, as did his insulting comments to ABC News correspondent Mary Bruce on Tuesday.\n <\/p>\n

\n One of Bruce\u2019s questions about the government\u2019s Jeffrey Epstein files prompted Trump to criticize her tone, bash ABC as a \u201ccrappy company,\u201d and encourage the FCC to revoke the network\u2019s licenses.\n <\/p>\n

\n Bruce was praised by fellow members of the White House press corps for asking important questions despite the president\u2019s demeaning comments.\n <\/p>\n

\n After the tense Oval Office exchange, the White House generated a list of grievances against ABC and claimed the news division had decided to \u201cwage war\u201d against Trump and his voters.\n <\/p>\n

\n ABC and its parent company, Disney, declined to comment, choosing to let the news division\u2019s work speak for itself.\n <\/p>\n

\n On Wednesday\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d co-host Robin Roberts referenced these \u201cextremely challenging times\u201d and thanked Bruce for \u201cyour willingness to ask these types of questions\u201d to those in power.\n <\/p>\n

\n The president\u2019s latest blast against Kimmel came Wednesday night, shortly after Kimmel talked on air about Trump reversing course and signing the bill compelling the Justice Department to release Epstein materials.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe are one step closer to answering the question, what did the president know and how old were these women when he knew it,\u201d Kimmel quipped.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump wrote that Kimmel has \u201cNO TALENT and VERY POOR TELEVISION RATINGS\u201d and asked, \u201cWhy do the TV Syndicates put up with it? Also, totally biased coverage. Get the bum off the air!!!\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Kimmel\u2019s ratings are better than Trump thinks, but that\u2019s beside the point. The point is that Trump wants to drive a wedge between Kimmel and local stations, which he called \u201csyndicates.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Two big owners of ABC-affiliated stations, Nexstar and Sinclair, need Trump\u2019s man in charge of regulating stations, FCC chair Brendan Carr, to approve pending deals.\n <\/p>\n

\n Both Nexstar and Sinclair yanked Kimmel\u2019s show back in September when Carr denounced Kimmel\u2019s remarks about Charlie Kirk\u2019s suspected killer. The highly unusual blackout spotlighted longstanding tensions between local affiliates and national networks \u2014 as well as the affiliates\u2019 limited power.\n <\/p>\n

\n ABC briefly suspended Kimmel\u2019s show nationwide, but brought it back in a matter of days, leaving Nexstar and Sinclair little choice<\/a> but to resume airing it.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier this week Carr announced that the FCC will review the relationships between networks and affiliates, though his agency has little power to effect change.\n <\/p>\n

\n As for Kimmel, he made it sound like he\u2019s grown accustomed to Trump\u2019s angry posts.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI woke up this morning, I\u2019m in bed, my wife comes out of the bathroom, she\u2019s got her phone,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cShe goes, \u2018Um, Trump tweeted you should be fired again.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 And then I went downstairs and made bagels for the kids.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n He also remarked that \u201cif you got this many threats from a neighbor, you\u2019d have no problem getting a restraining order. The judge would be like, \u2018Yeah, sounds like the guy\u2019s nuts.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump also recently took out his anger on another late-night comic, NBC\u2019s Seth Meyers; last Saturday Trump said Meyers has \u201can incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome\u201d and \u201cNBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Carr reposted Trump\u2019s message on X without any further comment.\n <\/p>\n

\n Meyers brought up Trump\u2019s grievance on Monday\u2019s edition of \u201cLate Night,\u201d remarking that \u201cbeing attacked by the president this weekend doesn\u2019t make me special in any way, shape or form. I was simply on the same shit list as Christopher Wray, James Comey, Indiana Republicans, Thomas Massie, Rand Paul, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and former President Joe Biden.\u201d\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A version of this article first appeared in the \u201cReliable Sources\u201d newsletter.
