With the 2026 Met Gala<\/a> theme being announced, many people were blindsided that Jeff Bezos<\/a> and Lauren S\u00e1nchez\u2019s names were attached to the ball held on the first Monday of May. However, new reports have alleged that the deal was thoroughly planned out, and the billionaires have taken most of the reins.<\/p>\n

According to Rob Shuter\u2019s #ShuterScoop<\/a>, the couple has \u201cseized control\u201d of the Met Gala<\/a>. \u201cThey aren\u2019t just donors,\u201d a longtime Met insider shared. \u201cJeff is writing the checks. Lauren is making the calls. They\u2019re basically running the Gala.\u201d While Vogue\u2019s Anna Wintour<\/a> is still the chair of the world-famous gala, sources claim that S\u00e1nchez\u2019s influence is strong. \u201cAnna\u2019s shadow is still long,\u201d the insider says, \u201cbut make no mistake \u2014 everyone is suddenly orbiting Jeff and Lauren.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former journalist is reportedly calling the shots by \u201ccalling designers, pushing for a glossier, sexier Gala, and positioning herself as the new celebrity whisperer.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with the New York Times<\/a>, Wintour defended the couple as sponsors, saying that S\u00e1nchez \u201cloves costumes\u201d and \u201cloves fashion,\u201d referring to the Gala\u2019s theme \u201cCostume Art.\u201d This also isn\u2019t the first time that Bezos held a big position for the Met Gala. Amazon sponsored the 2012 gala, and he served as honorary chair.<\/p>\n

The report comes months after rumors spread that Jeff Bezos was gifting Vogue and Cond\u00e9 Nast to S\u00e1nchez as a wedding gift. A source told\u00a0the Daily Mail<\/a> back in July: \u201cThe rumour that Jeff is going to buy Cond\u00e9 Nast is all anyone\u2019s talking about in the fashion industry and inside Vogue,\u201d adding, \u201cLauren Sanchez<\/a>\u00a0is such an unlikely cover star, and the word is that she landed the July issue partly because the Newhouse family want to butter up Bezos. In New York they\u2019re slimming down the business which is exactly what companies do before a sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source continued, \u201cAnna is said to be the one brokering the deal so that\u2019s why Lauren was put on the cover. Anna has equity in the business so has a lot to gain from a sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wintour stepped as Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, with Chloe Malle was promoted to Head of Editorial Content.
