{"id":308459,"date":"2025-11-23T06:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T06:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/308459\/"},"modified":"2025-11-23T06:31:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T06:31:07","slug":"how-the-scarecrow-and-tin-man-got-final-looks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/308459\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Scarecrow and\u00a0Tin Man Got Final Looks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSPOILER ALERT:\u00a0This article contains major spoilers for plot points, cameos and the ending of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/wicked\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wicked\" data-tag=\"wicked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wicked<\/a>: For Good\u201d now playing in theaters, as well as minor spoilers for the \u201cWicked\u201d stage show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWicked\u201d makeup designer Frances Hannon had her work cut out for her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter successfully finding the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/artisans\/news\/wicked-makeup-artist-cynthia-erivo-green-elphaba-1236207520\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/artisans\/news\/wicked-makeup-artist-cynthia-erivo-green-elphaba-1236207520\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perfect verdant hue to turn Cynthia Erivo green<\/a>, she had to continue each character\u2019s arc for the film\u2019s conclusion, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/wicked-for-good\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wicked-for-good\" data-tag=\"wicked-for-good\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wicked: For Good<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFor Good\u201d doesn\u2019t just continue the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda\u2019s (Ariana Grande) friendship; it also gives the backstory of Dorothy\u2019s companions: The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion and The Scarecrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFiyero (<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jonathan-bailey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jonathan-bailey\" data-tag=\"jonathan-bailey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Bailey<\/a>), who is in a love triangle with Elphaba and Glinda, becomes the Scarecrow, while Boq (<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ethan-slater\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ethan-slater\" data-tag=\"ethan-slater\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ethan Slater<\/a>), a Munchkin, transforms into the Tin Man. All the transformations were done practically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHere, Hannon breaks down how Slater and Bailey transformed into their respective characters.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tBoq\u2019s Transformation\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/C42F36FD-8636-4D03-81CE-6CCF39530A33.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"682\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn \u201cWicked,\u201d Boq becomes smitten with Glinda the moment he lays eyes on her on their first day at Shiz University. But Glinda has her eyes set on Prince Fiyero, so she convinces Boq to court Nessarose instead. Nessa believes Boq truly cares for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d Nessa becomes the Governor of Munchkinland after her father dies. When Boq tries to leave, she uses her power to oppress the Munchkins, forcing Boq to stay with her. When Elphaba learns of this, she visits her sister to try to help. However, things go wrong, and Nessa casts a spell from the Grimmerie, hoping to have Boq\u2019s heart. Things end with Elphaba regaining control and stepping in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring the scene, Boq begins to feel his heart shrink, and metal starts attaching itself to him. Elphaba leaves, telling Nessa that he is asleep. After she leaves, he awakens and smashes through the door with an axe. Boq is now the Tin Man with no heart, and his transformation is complete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn pulling it off, Hannon explains that Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt were very specific about what they wanted. It also required a collaboration with production designer Nathan Crowley, costume designer Paul Tazewell and prosthetic makeup designer Mark Coulier. \u201cThe main thing was to make sure that whatever we did never removed the character from being so accessible and allowing all that emotion to come through,\u201d Hannon says. \u201cEven though he\u2019s covered in prosthetics, and they were all practical, you still saw Boq underneath it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAside from keeping his emotions intact, the details of what made him the Tin Man were just as important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCoulier began by making a plaster cast of Slater\u2019s face. A few weeks later, Slater saw the Tin Man design on a Styrofoam head. He recalls thinking, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really look like me; it looks like the Tin Man.\u201d Coulier assured him that the pieces would stretch to contour to his face. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn total, Slater says 11 pieces were applied to his face, including cheekbone prosthetics that changed his cheek line and additional pieces to alter his jawline. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe application process took four hours. \u201cI would go sit in the prosthetics chair with the team, and they would start applying glue to my eyebrows to tack them down,\u201d Slater explains. \u201cThey started layering on these pieces of silicone, piece by piece. It needed to be meticulous and precise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSlater\u2019s eyelids and lips were painted silver, and he wore dentures. \u201cI had contacts to make my eyes gray-silver,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe actor recalls seeing himself in the mirror for the first time: \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe what I was seeing. It looked like me, but it didn\u2019t look like me. The thing that really blew my mind was it didn\u2019t look anything like it did on the Styrofoam head because it had completely morphed to my face. I could lift an eyebrow, and the eyebrow would lift, and you could see my dimples come through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Tin Man\u2019s body was developed using metal pieces from Nessa\u2019s office. Hannon says, \u201cThe little square where his heart would be was part of the fireplace. On the tray were sugar bowls and milk jugs, and the handles of the jug were his ears. On his fingers were salt and pepper pots, thimbles, and bits from the fireplace.\u201d She adds, \u201cThe little rivets around the edges were very delicate and hand-picked and chosen by Jon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHannon worked with Coulier to find the balance of keeping Slater\u2019s performance visible through the design. \u201cYou want him to still have a human quality, so you don\u2019t give him a bulbous nose from the teapot or anything silly. You stay within all the parameters that leave the human that brings the Tin Man to the performance.\u201d When designing him, they wanted to nod to the previous film without copying what had come before. \u201cWe started by looking at the silvers. The arms had to match the face. Mark [Coulier] painted the pieces in advance. It matched the other pieces on his body, but it didn\u2019t look different from the other parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBy the time of \u201cMarch of the Witch Hunters,\u201d there was a slight progression in his makeup. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe tin was now starting to show details of rust after he had been out in the rain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for Slater\u2019s hair, it needed to be scraped and flattened before a bald cap could be put on. Boq was given extension pieces to make his hair \u201carchitectural and big.\u201d Slater says the bald cap was as tight as possible. \u201cIt took about 30 minutes to do because there\u2019s a lot of hair there. I feel like I have a lot of hair now, but this was three times as much.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHannon adds, \u201cThe little funnel went on at the last minute.\u201d In total, \u201cIt took roughly four hours. The suit was left to last because once he was in that suit, he was pretty much standing all the time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn addition to the practical makeup, VFX was used. Chu gave credit to the VFX team for their work, saying, \u201cThere were mechanical joints on the Tin Man body that were done by VFX and some seams cleaned up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFiyero\u2019s Transformation<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WK2_Char1Sheet4_Fiyero_RGB_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"647\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversal<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFiyero\u2019s transformation is foreshadowed. The lyrics of \u201cDancing Through Life\u201d hint at what his future holds, and costume designer Paul Tazewell weaves the easter egg into his Emerald City guard costume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring \u201cNo Good Deed,\u201d Elphaba casts a spell to protect Fiyero from torture after he\u2019s been captured by the Wizard\u2019s guards. The spell turns him into a Scarecrow, which allows him to live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHannon says they definitely took a nod to the film in creating the Scarecrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe explains, \u201cWe didn\u2019t go for that big baggy look over the head with the big rope around his neck. What Paul Tazewell did was brilliant. He went for the straw coming out of the areas of the seams and everything in his uniform.\u201d She adds, \u201cMark had made a burlap collar so that where the buttons on the shirt were all busting open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHannon made the Scarecrow\u2019s wig and eyebrows from grass and straw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI used blonde in Fiyero\u2019s hair as a very strong point to carry through that change. The blonde in his own hair in film one and the opening of film two, then develops into the straw quality from the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe wig was made from heads of wheat and sewn in, but with very little hair in it,\u201d She adds, \u201cThen you had that cute little cap that Paul designed from bark on the top.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdditionally, Hannon points to a subtle detail in Jonathan\u2019s eyes. Fiyero comes from Winkie Country, which is very much in the blue palette. Hannon says, \u201cHe had blue contact lenses.
