{"id":311646,"date":"2025-11-24T22:50:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T22:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/311646\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T22:50:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T22:50:08","slug":"ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-best-defenders-coach-survey-all-state-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/311646\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio high school girls soccer\u2019s best defenders: Coach survey, All-State results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SQQMJZUBI5HJXPWTWE7XOWOJHQ\">The 2025 Ohio high school girls soccer season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/bay-girls-soccer-repeats-as-state-champ-in-division-iii-with-1-0-win-over-hamilton-badin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/bay-girls-soccer-repeats-as-state-champ-in-division-iii-with-1-0-win-over-hamilton-badin.html\">is in the books<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/all-ohio-boys-and-girls-soccer-teams-for-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/all-ohio-boys-and-girls-soccer-teams-for-2025.html\">All-State teams are out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G67TCS3CEFG6VAP73RF2YHEELI\">Cleveland.com contacted girls soccer coaches across the state and asked them to fill out a survey requesting information about their top players. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SN4MT6ZHRRD3FE4QBKDI6T3P3E\">We started by featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-top-forwards-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-top-forwards-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\">top forwards highlighted by coaches<\/a> in those surveys, followed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-best-midfielders-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-best-midfielders-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\">best midfielders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-best-goalkeepers-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2025\/11\/ohio-high-school-girls-soccers-best-goalkeepers-coach-survey-all-state-results.html\">goalkeepers<\/a>. Now it\u2019s the best defenders\u2019 turn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2TBW66AOGBEUJFC5ZHQLLGTAUA\">If you are an Ohio high school girls soccer coach who did not receive the survey, email mswanson@advancelocal.com. At the bottom is a list of the All-State defenders in all divisions in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>TOP DEFENDERS, AS HIGHLIGHTED BY COACHESGrace Bruewer, Amherst Steele, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T4EW45AZSZG6HAI7MUWIVOOEFY\">A four-year starter and team captain at center back, Bruewer scored three goals in 2025. An academic All-Ohio honoree, she\u2019s \u201cone of the reasons we\u2019ve reached three straight district title games and a regional game for the first time in school history,\u201d coach Gary Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n<p>Kylie DeForde, Mayfield, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SYWCFB2GWZHRVKMLJL4TWM47KA\">DeForde anchored a back line that recorded 14 shutouts in 2025, setting the school record. Across her four years as a varsity starter, Mayfield posted a 47-17-10 record. \u201cKylie is the cornerstone of our defensive unit and one of the most accomplished defenders in the history of our program,\u201d coach Ivica Miljak said.<\/p>\n<p>Maggie Falknor, Vermilion, Freshman<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RZ66JEYDARGNZN4YVZYPE5THJ4\">Falknor started every game for Vermilion as a freshman, finishing with a goal and an assist. \u201cAs she continues to grow, she will be a force that will be tough to beat,\u201d coach Katie Hayden said. <\/p>\n<p>Kearsten Flory, Stow-Munroe Falls, Junior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YYCUM5OUZZDU3GWACL3ZFIV6HE\">An excellent 1v1 defender, Flory reads the game extremely well. She\u2019s a \u201cmajor reason for our six shutouts we had this year,\u201d coach Dino McIntyre said.<\/p>\n<p>Avery George, Bexley, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6WASFL23GVCHJHD4WHHTV25SZQ\">A Louisville commit, George had five goals and three assists in 2025 playing center back. \u201cHer 1v1 skills are outstanding,\u201d coach Scott James said. \u201cShe is one of the best defenders that I have ever coached and most definitely the best leader that I have ever coached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yashira \u201cRuby\u201d Gonzalez, Riverside, Junior <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C56AVKTPKND27AGK2PKUGKJRMU\">Gonzalez plays fast and with no fear from her sweeper position. \u201cThere is no breakaway play that does not include her chasing down the offense \u2014 shoot early, because Ruby will run anyone down,&#8221; coach Jonathan Breech said.<\/p>\n<p>Calli Jakacki, Kenston, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K3AL2ODD7RCFNIWUZVAGNNO6QI\">Jakacki earned the role of team captain over the summer and didn\u2019t disappoint, leading by example via determination, dedication and aggressive play at center back and defensive midfield. \u201cCalli played a position that required physicality and mental toughness as she went against the best forwards and midfielders all season, and she won many battles,\u201d coach Eric Sway said.<\/p>\n<p>Leah Koester, Bowling Green, Junior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QLMSTX7SYFG7XCIWJUDDACWF7I\">Koester scored two goals this season, both off corner kicks. She\u2019s a center back who has a great soccer IQ and is strong in the air clearing crosses and corners out of the box. \u201cShe is physical and reads the forward pass well, which makes her hard to beat,\u201d coach Erika Kimple said.<\/p>\n<p>Kenna Nelson, Eastwood, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AIDHE4QD6NCR5PZ6326NQGHRYI\">Nelson rarely came off the field in 2025, dictating the Eastwood defense and setting the tempo on the back line. \u201cShe jump-started many attacking opportunities on outlets from the back, which led to several goals and goal-scoring opportunities this season,\u201d coach Julie Cross said. \u201cKenna has the confidence to take opposing players on 1v1 and has the fitness to work up and down the length of the field for the duration of a game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lexi Reyes, Anderson, Freshman<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AFLWYTPI2RECDLSIM3236FPJL4\">Reyes started at center back for Anderson and played a big part in the Raptors advancing to the state semifinals, losing to eventual state champion Anthony Wayne. \u201cShe gets better every time she plays,\u201d coach Andy Boyd said.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia Rondini, Brush, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G3SNULMFA5GEBLYPO32NTSCFAE\">Rondini led the Brush defense for three years, playing sweeper and organizing the defense. She scored two goals in her final year of high school soccer.<\/p>\n<p>Brylee Schermerhorn, Anthony Wayne, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5SXLJSMMFVCC5E4ZGEAXS3TWKQ\">A naturally left-footed defender with an attacker\u2019s mindset, Schermerhorn will be playing college soccer at Columbus State in Georgia in 2026. She\u2019s \u201creally good 1v1 and a great leader,\u201d coach Lori Williams said. <\/p>\n<p>Caitlyn Taylor, Medina, Senior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQOSOS7V5VHQVMMGOS33AH5BKQ\">Taylor\u2019s lockdown defending helped lead Medina to an unbeaten regular season and conference championship. She earned first-team conference and district honors. <\/p>\n<p>Morgan Tingler, Sheridan, Junior<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"52SJGF2JLZGPLJF3JAO3OC7ONE\">A center back who piles up steals and slide tackles, Tingler is a two-time MVP, three-time first-team MVL selection and MVL defensive player of the year. \u201cShe is like a heat-seeking missile \u2014 very durable, plays the whole game and hasn\u2019t missed one in three years,&#8221; coach Jeremy Strong said.<\/p>\n<p>2025 ALL-STATE DEFENDERSSally Altenberg, Oakwood DIII, Sr.Ava Barnesky, Northview (Sylvania) DII, Sr.Izzy Basalo, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy DIII, So.Chloe Bigham, Hudson DII, Sr.Ella Chapman, Athens DIII, Sr.Jordyn Copley, Firelands (Oberlin) DIV, Sr.Laney Condoleon, John F.
