WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump on Monday signed an executive order creating a federal \u201cGenesis mission\u201d to support US dominance in artificial intelligence<\/a> \u2014 with officials comparing it to the Apollo Program that landed men on the moon during the space race.<\/p>\n

Administration officials said the initiative would \u201cmassively accelerate the rate of scientific breakthroughs\u201d by using \u201cunmatched computing capabilities and resources of the Department of Energy\u2019s National Laboratories to unlock federal data sets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Labs will work with private companies to generate research that can be applied to healthcare, energy production and engineering, officials said.<\/p>\n

The document orders Energy Secretary Chris Wright to \u201cestablish and operate the American Science and Security Platform (Platform) to serve as the infrastructure for the Mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

The platform will include \u201chigh-performance computing resources, including DOE national laboratory supercomputers and secure cloud-based AI computing environments, capable of supporting large-scale model training, simulation, and\u00a0inference,\u201d the order says.<\/p>\n

Wright is also ordered to determine federal research facilities \u201cwith the ability to engage in AI-directed experimentation and manufacturing\u201d and to source \u201cdatasets from federally funded research, other agencies, academic institutions, and approved private-sector partners, as\u00a0appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mission\u2019s goal is \u201cbringing together of scientific data sets of the top scientists across our 17 National Laboratories, across our United States university system and across the private sector businesses that are focused on science, engineering, innovation and energy,\u201d an official said.<\/p>\n

Officials who briefed reporters on the plan said that the initiative will respect copyright protections for published works<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be very careful to respect intellectual property rights,\u201d one official said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to protect copyrights and sensitive information. That\u2019ll be true as long as the mission goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US government will help generate data for health, energy and engineering breakthroughs, officials said. AP<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Genesis Mission will use AI to automate experiment design, accelerate simulations and generate predictive models for everything from protein folding to fusion plasma dynamics,\u201d one official said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will shorten discovery timelines from years to days or even hours, empowering scientists to test bolder hypotheses and discover breakthroughs currently unreachable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the power of AI, America is on the brink of a scientific revolution that will redefine American global scientific supremacy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The president privately signed the document amid political backlash to a boom in data center construction, which has caused electricity prices to increase<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Energy Department has entered into partnerships this month with chipmakers and computing giants like Nvidia and Dell, AMD and HPE to support the mission, officials said.<\/p>\n

Those four companies said \u201cwe\u2019re ready to come build super compute facilities at your National Labs right now,\u201d said one official.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will see unbelievable advancements in health sciences,\u201d a different official predicted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to understand the exact chemistry and biology that they are and how to combat [illnesses]. We\u2019ve seen progress with that \u2014 relatively significant progress in the last five years.
