When they selected him 176th overall in the 2024 NHL entry draft, the Detroit<\/a> Red Wings knew that taking Swedish forward Charlie Forslund<\/a> was a roll of the dice.<\/p>\n

At the age of 17, Forslund was a big-time scorer for Falun in the third tier of Swedish hockey.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou start thinking this could be something that could be potentially really good for us down the road,\u201d Red Wings assistant GM and director of amateur scouting Kris Draper<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Instead, it\u2019s looking like another late-round gamble that simply isn\u2019t going to work out in Detroit\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n

Forslund has been released by Mora IK of Hockey Allsvenskan, the Swedish second division.<\/p>\n

According to Andreas H\u00e4gglund, the sporting director for Mora, the decision to drop Forslund isn\u2019t complicated. He simply wasn\u2019t good enough to make the grade.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s nothing strange,\u201d H\u00e4gglund told Swedish website Expressen<\/a>. \u201cHe wanted to play first-team hockey, and we don\u2019t have the chance to give him that.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had another junior before him, and there\u2019s a reason for that. It\u2019s a tough, competitive situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Little Work For Red Wings Pick<\/p>\n

In 12 games for Mora\u2019s junior club this season, Forslund was good for 3-4-7 totals and a minus-4 rating. Over two seasons, he\u2019d only played six games in the second tier, accounting for one assist.<\/p>\n

H\u00e4gglund admitted that Forslund has not lived up to expectations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t really have any patience, and then you want to move on,\u201d H\u00e4gglund said. \u201cIf it\u2019s just about playing in the Swedish Hockey League, it will be difficult for us right now to give that opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen there is no reason for us to go further together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some rumblings within the fan base felt that it was too early to give up on someone that an NHL team felt showed so much promise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had other juniors up before Charlie in any case,\u201d H\u00e4gglund said. \u201cIs (Forslund) our biggest talent in the U20? No, not as we\u2019re thinking right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have the right to think what they want and be annoyed. I\u2019m focused on us winning hockey games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forslund, 19, is joining Almtuna IS, also of Hockey Allsvenskan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see if he fits there,\u201d H\u00e4gglund said.<\/p>\n
