Salesforce<\/a> CEO Marc Benioff, one of Silicon Valley\u2019s most vocal boosters of ChatGPT, announced Sunday that he\u2019s abandoning OpenAI\u2019s chatbot after a brief trial of Google\u2019s newly released Gemini 3 model.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoly s\u2014. I\u2019ve used ChatGPT every day for 3 years. Just spent 2 hours on Gemini 3. I\u2019m not going back,\u201d Benioff wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cThe leap is insane \u2014 reasoning, speed, images, video\u2026 everything is sharper and faster. It feels like the world just changed, again.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Benioff, who has 1.1 million followers on X<\/a>, had more than 3.2 million people see his post by Tuesday morning, according to the social network.\u200b His endorsement is notable not just because of his prominence\u2014his net worth is currently around $8.5 billion, according to Forbes<\/a>\u2014but because of his company\u2019s extensive partnerships across the AI landscape. Just last month, Salesforce announced an expanded strategic partnership with OpenAI<\/a>, integrating its Agentforce 360 platform with ChatGPT and allowing enterprises to use OpenAI\u2019s GPT-5 models within Salesforce products.\u200b<\/p>\n

At the time, Benioff praised that collaboration. \u201cAs consumers, we already get instant recommendations or insights from ChatGPT,\u201d he said in October<\/a>. \u201cNow enterprises can deliver that same intelligence and immediacy.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

The swift about-face from ChatGPT to Google\u2019s Gemini underscores how quickly things can change as AI models leapfrog one another in capability on a near-monthly basis.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s big debut<\/p>\n

Google and its DeepMind<\/a> division released Gemini 3 last week<\/a>, describing it <\/a>as the company\u2019s \u201cmost intelligent model, which \u201ccombines all of Gemini\u2019s capabilities together so you can bring any idea to life.\u201d The model almost immediately topped the LMArena leaderboard<\/a>, a crowdsourced benchmark that evaluates AI systems on reasoning, coding, writing, and factual accuracy.\u200b<\/p>\n

Leaders across Silicon Valley took notice of Gemini\u2019s big launch. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman congratulated Google on X, saying<\/a>: \u201cCongrats to Google on Gemini 3! Looks like a great model.\u201d Andrej Karpathy, one of OpenAI\u2019s co-founder and a former AI director at Tesla<\/a>, said on X<\/a> he had \u201ca positive early impression\u201d of the model, calling it \u201cvery solid daily driver potential\u201d and \u201cclearly a tier 1 LLM.\u201d Stripe<\/a> CEO Patrick Collison posted on X<\/a> that Gemini 3 successfully built him an \u201cinteractive web page summarizing 10 breakthroughs in genetics,\u201d which he called \u201cpretty cool.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

But behind the public compliments, there are signs of concern at OpenAI. In an internal memo written before Gemini 3\u2019s release and obtained by The Information<\/a>, Altman told employees to expect \u201crough vibes,\u201d adding \u201cby all accounts, Google has been doing excellent work recently.\u201d He said Google\u2019s progress could \u201ccreate some temporary economic headwinds for our company,\u201d but insisted OpenAI is \u201ccatching up fast.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been a flurry of new models in the AI sector recently.
